About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store operations, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps ensure effective customer service, merchandising, inventory control, financial integrity, security, cleanliness, and compliance with company policies and legal requirements. The position involves frequent physical activity in a fast-paced retail environment, occasional travel with limited overnight stays, and occasional driving or use of personal transportation for business purposes.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, and SAFE and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for work-related duties.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Some store locations may give preference to bilingual Spanish speakers.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and proper use of fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Develop staff and ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally travel, including driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, or visits to other Dollar General stores.
