About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This role is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate pursuing a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports recruiting, merchandising, inventory control, customer service, store security, cash control, cleanliness, and employee development. The role also includes reviewing operating statements for business trends and opportunities, completing required documentation, and traveling occasionally to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including functions used to generate reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to travel occasionally, including limited overnight stays; occasional driving or providing own transportation is required for work-related activities.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Some store locations may give preference to bilingual Spanish speakers.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise in accordance with established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and foster cooperation, collaboration, and open communication.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
