About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and assists with recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, customer service, store security and cash controls, opening and closing, cleanliness, and compliance with company procedures. The role also includes reviewing operating statements and completing required paperwork and documentation. The position involves frequent movement and handling of merchandise and equipment in a fast-paced store environment, some travel with limited overnight stays, and occasional driving or providing personal transportation for business activities.

Requirements

Must be 21 or older.
Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Frequent proper lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, meetings, and visits to other stores.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist in recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies as outlined in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Assist with store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as required, including occasional bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
