About The Position

This position is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, assembling, and sterilizing instruments, supplies, and linens, as well as assembling surgical case carts in Sterile Processing, in accordance with established policies, procedures, and industry standards. The role follows quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards and supports the timely delivery of patient care equipment to clinical units. The technician uses advanced instrumentation knowledge to assemble and prioritize surgical sets, including complex trays, specialty sets, code carts, and case carts. The role operates and monitors sterilization and washer-disinfector equipment, conducts and documents sterilization-cycle testing, maintains instrument and inventory records, and helps address workflow, equipment, quality, or sterility concerns. The technician also supports training for new technicians and participates in education, in-service training, and process improvement initiatives. The scheduled hours are 7:00 am–3:30 pm. Compensation is $21.96–$30.74. The role has physical demands including frequent use of arms and hands, standing, walking, and sitting; occasional bending, stooping, and squatting; and lifting up to 35 lbs. and pushing or pulling up to 20 lbs. It may involve exposure to radiation, toxic chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens, with appropriate personal protective equipment required.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Current certification in Sterile Processing Technology (CRCST or equivalent).
One year of MWHC sterile processing experience or two years of external SPD I-level experience.
Demonstrated competence in sterile processing practices, including instrument identification and advanced set assembly.
Ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to operate automated and technical equipment used in sterile processing.
Critical thinking and analytical skills; ability to multitask, communicate effectively, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and cope with difficult situations.
Ability to tolerate irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Ability to meet physical demands, including constant use of arms and hands; frequent standing, walking, and sitting; occasional bending, stooping, and squatting; lifting 35 lbs.; and pushing and pulling up to 20 lbs.
Auditory and visual skills, including color determination.
Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and work with potential exposure to radiation, toxic chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens.

Responsibilities

Maintain departmental policies and procedures and follow quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Decontaminate, clean, inspect, and assemble surgical instruments and medical devices according to established policies and procedures.
Package and wrap instruments and supplies using techniques that maintain sterility.
Operate, monitor, and perform basic troubleshooting on steam sterilizers, low-temperature systems, ETO sterilizers, and washer-disinfectors.
Perform biological, chemical, and mechanical testing of sterilization cycles and document results according to quality assurance standards.
Accurately and efficiently assemble complex surgical trays, specialty sets, code carts, and case carts.
Identify, handle, and assemble specialized and delicate instrumentation used in advanced surgical procedures.
Store and rotate supplies, equipment, and instrument trays according to departmental procedures and industry standards.
Maintain accurate records for sterilization loads, instrument tracking, and inventory documentation.
Receive patient care equipment requests and deliver items to units in a timely, customer-focused manner.
Follow infection prevention practices, standard precautions, and safety guidelines related to chemicals and hazardous materials.
Use advanced instrumentation knowledge to support accurate assembly and prioritization of surgical sets, and report discrepancies to leadership.
Assist in resolving workflow issues, equipment concerns, or deviations related to instrument quality or sterility.
Provide training support to new technicians and serve as a resource on instrumentation, workflow processes, and sterilization methods.
Participate in education programs, in-service training, and process improvement initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned.
