(USA) Staff, Software Engineer
About The Position
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks. This role involves driving the full software lifecycle, ensuring quality through design reviews, and applying cloud-native architecture principles. You will mentor engineering teams, influence technical decisions, and collaborate across functions to translate complex requirements into effective solutions. Your expertise will support continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence, contributing to Walmart’s technology strategy and business objectives with a focus on reliability, agility, and developer productivity. The Trust Model Serving & Governance team within Marketplace Trust develops and manages the AI/ML infrastructure that enables intelligent decision-making across Walmart Marketplace. This team bridges Data Science and production by owning the full lifecycle of ML models that support seller risk, compliance, fraud detection, and trust decisions at scale. Responsibilities include model onboarding, deployment automation, inference infrastructure, monitoring, drift detection, and governance. The team collaborates closely with Product, Compliance, and Platform Engineering to deliver reliable, production-grade, and auditable business solutions that drive operational excellence and innovation.
Requirements
- Proven track record of designing and delivering production ML platform capabilities — model serving, MLOps pipelines, monitoring frameworks, or equivalent.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems architecture — event-driven design, Kafka, microservices, API design, and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Strong programming proficiency in Java and/or Python — ability to write production-quality code
- Experience with MLflow, Vertex AI, or equivalent model registry and lifecycle tooling.
- Hands-on experience with Spark, BigQuery, or data pipeline engineering at scale.
- Background building observability infrastructure — OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed tracing.
- Familiarity with real-time data processing patterns.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
- Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

- Utilize data-driven practices to define success metrics and optimize development processes.
