About The Position

Braze is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Messaging Experience team to build, maintain, and evolve Canvas, its flagship product for orchestrating and sending messages to clients worldwide. Canvas provides a visual programming interface for configuring and optimizing messaging across customer audiences, supported by real-time and batch processing, analytics, and automated decision-making. The role bridges the customer-facing dashboard and the orchestration engines that power message delivery. The position combines division-wide technical leadership with hands-on work on critical projects. The engineer partners with engineering managers, technical leads, and senior leadership to guide architecture and quality across a maturing suite of messaging channels and ensure a consistent experience throughout the division. Work includes leading complex cross-team initiatives, improving reliability and operability, mentoring engineers, and building foundational systems and frameworks. The role is hybrid.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including meaningful experience as a technical leader influencing multiple teams or complex product systems.
  • Experience building foundational backend systems at scale and working on complex, performant web-based user interfaces.
  • Comfort working across the full stack, with experience in Ruby on Rails and proficiency in modern frontend environments such as TypeScript and React.
  • Experience designing and shipping foundational infrastructure, including frameworks, libraries, or platform services used by many engineers.
  • Strong architectural judgment, including knowing when to invest in abstraction, when to keep solutions simple, and how to make technical decisions that support a maturing product suite.
  • Effective communication and mentoring skills, including the ability to explain technical debt as business risk and provide clear technical direction.
  • Track record of identifying high-leverage work, building consensus across teams, and completing projects with minimal direction amid ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or maintaining shared component libraries or design-system primitives.
  • Experience with real-time systems or event-driven architectures related to message orchestration.
  • Experience with developer-experience tooling such as code generation, scaffolding, or CI/CD for large-scale codebases.
  • Experience maturing a product from early stage to enterprise scale while maintaining developer velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Partner on the division’s technical vision and quality bar.
  • Drive architectural direction, define best practices, and help teams resolve persistent quality and technical debt issues.
  • Lead large, ambiguous, cross-team projects from problem framing and design through implementation, rollout, and operational support.
  • Help teams evolve their technology stacks and foundational primitives to support more sophisticated marketing use cases and maturing messaging channels.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels; simplify complex problems, connect technical choices to business outcomes, and raise standards through code reviews, architecture reviews, and pairing.
  • Improve observability and error handling across dashboard and delivery layers, advocate for incremental rollouts, and reduce division-wide incidents.
  • Design and build foundational systems and frameworks that multiply engineering effectiveness.
  • Develop shared frameworks for orchestration tools to provide a consistent experience across messaging channels.
  • Evolve the dashboard to support real-time feedback and sophisticated workflows for building, testing, launching, and analyzing user journeys.
  • Build platforms and code-generation tooling that help teams automate delivery of sophisticated user journeys.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation that may include equity.
  • Equity grants of restricted stock (RSUs).
  • Retirement plans and Employee Stock Purchase Plans.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits.
  • Fertility benefits and equal paid parental leave.
  • Professional development through formal career pathing, learning platforms, and a yearly learning stipend.
  • Curated in-office employee experience designed to foster community, team connections, and innovation.
  • Opportunities to give back, including an annual company-wide Volunteer Week and donation matching.
  • Employee Resource Groups.
  • Hybrid ways of working.
