About The Position

The Staff Software Engineer will work on Braze’s Messaging Experience team, building, maintaining, and evolving Canvas, the company’s flagship product for orchestrating and sending messages to clients worldwide. Canvas uses large-scale real-time and batch data processing to provide analytics, automated decision-making, and a visual programming interface for configuring customer messaging. This role bridges the customer-facing dashboard and the underlying delivery orchestration engines. The position combines division-wide technical leadership with hands-on work on critical projects. The engineer partners with engineering managers, technical leads, and senior leadership to guide architecture and quality across a maturing suite of messaging channels and deliver a consistent experience throughout the division. Work includes leading cross-team projects from problem framing and design through implementation, rollout, and operational support; building shared frameworks and foundational systems; supporting sophisticated messaging use cases; mentoring engineers; and improving reliability and operability. Recent and ongoing areas of work include shared orchestration frameworks across messaging channels, dashboard capabilities for real-time feedback and automated user-journey workflows, and platforms and code-generation tools that help teams deliver sophisticated customer journeys. For U.S.-based candidates, the stated starting base pay range is $184,000–$299,812 annually, with expected on-target earnings of $204,000–$332,400 annually, including bonus or commission. Offers may vary based on individualized factors. The role also qualifies for equity grants of restricted stock units.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including meaningful experience as a technical leader influencing multiple teams or complex product systems.
  • Experience building foundational backend systems at scale and working on complex, performant web-based user interfaces.
  • Comfort working across the full stack.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Proficiency in modern frontend environments, including TypeScript and React.
  • Experience designing and shipping foundational infrastructure, such as frameworks, libraries, or platform services used by many engineers.
  • Strong architectural judgment, including knowing when to invest in abstraction, when to keep things simple, and how to make technical decisions that support a maturing product suite.
  • Effective communication and mentoring skills, including the ability to explain technical debt as business risk and develop engineers through coaching and clear technical vision.
  • Track record of identifying high-leverage work, building consensus across teams, and driving projects to completion with minimal direction amid ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or maintaining shared component libraries or design-system primitives.
  • Experience with real-time systems or event-driven architectures related to message orchestration.
  • Experience with developer-experience tooling, such as code generation, scaffolding, or CI/CD for large-scale codebases.
  • Experience maturing a product from early stage to enterprise scale without losing developer velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Partner on the division’s technical vision and quality bar; drive architectural direction, define best practices, and help teams resolve persistent quality and technical-debt issues.
  • Lead large, ambiguous, cross-team projects from initial problem framing and design documentation through implementation, rollout, and operational support.
  • Help teams mature messaging channels and evolve their technology stacks to support sophisticated marketing use cases with flexible, robust foundational primitives.
  • Mentor engineers at every level; simplify complex problems, connect technical decisions to business outcomes, and raise engineering standards through code reviews, architecture reviews, and pairing.
  • Improve reliability and operability by strengthening observability and error handling across dashboard and delivery layers, advocating incremental rollouts, and reducing division-wide incidents.
  • Design and build foundational systems and frameworks, while remaining hands-on in delivering code.
  • Contribute to shared orchestration frameworks, dashboard capabilities for building, testing, launching, and analyzing user journeys, and platforms or code-generation tools for automating journey delivery.
