About The Position

Braze is seeking a Staff Engineer for its Messaging Experience team to build, maintain, and evolve Canvas, its flagship product for orchestrating and sending messages to clients worldwide. The role supports systems that process large volumes of data in real time and in batches, providing analytics, automated decision-making, and customer engagement capabilities. Canvas gives customers a visual programming interface for targeting and tuning messaging across their user base. The Staff Engineer bridges the customer-facing dashboard and the underlying delivery orchestration engines. The position combines division-wide technical leadership with hands-on work on critical projects. It partners with engineering managers, technical leads, and senior leadership to guide architecture and create a consistent, high-quality experience across the division and its expanding set of messaging channels.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including meaningful experience as a technical leader influencing multiple teams or complex product systems.
  • Experience building foundational backend systems at scale and working on complex, performant web-based user interfaces.
  • Comfort working across the full stack, with experience in Ruby on Rails and proficiency in modern frontend environments such as TypeScript and React.
  • Experience designing and shipping foundational infrastructure, such as frameworks, libraries, or platform services used by many engineers.
  • Strong architectural judgment, including knowing when to invest in abstraction, when to keep things simple, and how to make technical bets that support a maturing product suite.
  • Effective communication and mentoring skills, including the ability to explain technical debt as business risk and elevate engineers through coaching and clear technical vision.
  • Track record of identifying high-leverage work, building consensus across teams, and completing projects with minimal direction in ambiguous situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or maintaining shared component libraries or design system primitives.
  • Experience with real-time systems or event-driven architectures related to message orchestration.
  • Experience with developer experience tooling, such as code generation, scaffolding, or CI/CD for large-scale codebases.
  • Experience maturing a product from early stage to enterprise scale while maintaining developer velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Partner on the division’s technical vision and quality bar; drive architectural direction, define best practices, and help teams address persistent quality and technical debt issues.
  • Lead large, ambiguous, cross-team projects from problem framing and design documentation through implementation, rollout, and operational support.
  • Help teams evolve messaging channel technology stacks and foundational primitives to support more sophisticated marketing use cases.
  • Mentor engineers at every level by simplifying complex problems, connecting technical decisions to business outcomes, and contributing through code review, architecture review, and pairing.
  • Improve reliability and operability by strengthening observability and error handling across dashboard and delivery layers, advocating incremental rollouts, and reducing division-wide incidents.
  • Design and build foundational systems and frameworks as a hands-on engineer.
  • Develop shared frameworks for orchestration tools to provide a consistent experience across messaging channels.
  • Evolve the dashboard to support real-time feedback and sophisticated automated workflows for building, testing, launching, and analyzing user journeys.
  • Build platforms and code-generation tooling that help teams automate delivery of sophisticated user journeys.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation that may include equity.
  • Retirement and Employee Stock Purchase Plans.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Comprehensive benefit plans covering medical, dental, vision, life, and disability.
  • Family services that include fertility benefits and equal paid parental leave.
  • Professional development supported by formal career pathing, learning platforms, and a yearly learning stipend.
  • Curated in-office employee experience designed to foster community, team connections, and innovation.
  • Opportunities to give back to the community, including an annual company-wide Volunteer Week and donation matching.
  • Employee Resource Groups.
