About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff+ Software Engineer for its Platform Intelligence team, which turns Claude models’ capabilities into API features developers can use. The team owns capabilities including tool use, built-in tools such as web search and code execution, thinking controls, structured outputs, and memory, files, and skills APIs. It also owns API versioning and production evaluations, and leads the API work for model launches, including safety features and controls. This involves coordinating with research, safeguards, product, and cloud partners so the model, features, SDKs, and documentation are ready together for launch. The role leads the design, development, and operation of API capabilities used by developers worldwide. It works with research to translate new model abilities into simple, durable, and safe-to-use interfaces, and leads launch planning and readiness across teams. The engineer sets technical direction for cross-team work, writes design proposals, reviews API designs, and mentors other engineers. The team works on turning research prototypes into public API features, operating tools under production traffic, automating launch processes, and building evaluations that detect regressions. The position follows a location-based hybrid policy: staff are currently expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more. Preference is given to candidates based in NY, SEA, SF, or the Bay Area.

  • Experience designing and operating production distributed systems where correctness, latency, and availability matter.
  • Strong product sense and care for API design and developer experience.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions with incomplete information and changing models or priorities.
  • Ability to explain technical tradeoffs clearly to research, product, and go-to-market partners, including non-engineers.
  • Ability to improve other engineers’ work through design review and mentoring.
  • Regular use of AI tools in designing, building, and reviewing software.
  • Care about the societal impact of the work and Anthropic’s mission to build safe, beneficial AI.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

  • Experience with storage, memory, or context systems at scale.
  • Experience integrating with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and operation of API capabilities for developers.
  • Work with research teams to understand model capabilities and turn them into simple, durable API interfaces that are difficult to misuse.
  • Lead API readiness for new model launches by planning work, tracking readiness across teams, resolving late-stage issues, and supporting launch-day execution.
  • Improve launch processes to make future model launches faster and safer.
  • Set technical direction for work spanning several teams.
  • Write clear technical design proposals and review API designs from other teams.
  • Mentor engineers on the team.
  • Design and operate production tools and capabilities, including tools such as web search and code execution.
  • Build evaluations to identify capability regressions before launch.
