Staff Product Designer, Console Experience

DigitalOcean•Denver, CO
•$192,800 - $241,000•Remote

About The Position

DigitalOcean is hiring a Staff Product Designer to own the console experience end to end, from navigation and onboarding to cross-product patterns and the overall information architecture. The console serves customers ranging from individual developers to enterprise platform teams as they provision, manage, and scale infrastructure. The designer will work on a product team while developing reusable frameworks, patterns, and guidance that teams across the console can rely on. This role combines detailed interaction design with a system-wide perspective, treating the design system as a product and owning its component library, standards, and roadmap in partnership with engineering. The designer will establish quality and review practices, create high-leverage shared patterns, and set the creative direction for the console. The role also includes partnering closely with engineers to ensure designs are implemented as intended and supporting UI engineers’ design skills through a design guild, reviews, and pairing. This is a remote position.

Requirements

  • Staff-level product design experience.
  • A proven track record of building and scaling a design system across multiple products or teams.
  • Ability to design reusable, consistent systems and patterns at scale rather than focusing on one-off screens.
  • Strong craft across interaction, visual, and information design, demonstrated by a portfolio showing design quality and measurable UX impact.
  • Experience driving quality and adoption through influence, standards, partnership, and persuasion across teams.
  • Comfort setting direction amid ambiguity, including as the most senior or only designer in the room.
  • A strong point of view on design and the conviction to own a product’s creative direction.
  • Strong collaboration with engineers; hands-on knowledge of front-end constraints and how design systems work in code is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience running or scaling a design system guild or community of practice across a large engineering organization.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts such as compute, storage, networking, or Kubernetes, or a track record of quickly learning technical domains.
  • Experience designing for novice and expert users within the same product.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end console experience, from first login through customers’ daily workflows.
  • Own the design system, including its component library, patterns, visual and interaction standards, and roadmap in partnership with engineering.
  • Establish the product suite’s design quality bar and a review process to support consistent, polished interfaces.
  • Create reusable patterns that enable product teams to ship well-designed interfaces without a dedicated designer on each team.
  • Own shared, high-visibility surfaces such as navigation, onboarding, the app shell, and landing pages.
  • Partner with engineering to ensure designs are implemented as intended.
  • Develop UI engineers’ design skills through a design guild, reviews, and pairing.
  • Use evidence to advocate for design investment and identify where it can improve the user experience.
  • Set and own the creative vision for the console, including a clear point of view on its look and feel.

Benefits

  • Reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning courses.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Local employee meetups.
  • Flexible time off policy.
  • Potential performance-based bonus.
  • Equity compensation for eligible employees, including grants upon hire.
  • Option to participate in the Employee Stock Purchase Program.
