Staff Embedded Software Engineers

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies•Palo Alto, CA
•$222,000 - $279,000

About The Position

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, a joint venture between Rivian and Volkswagen Group, is hiring a Staff Embedded Software Engineer to develop software for vehicle-access systems and software-defined vehicles. The role involves designing RTOS-based microcontroller firmware and software architectures for low-power BLE and NFC systems, as well as developing embedded Linux systems focused on embedded-to-cloud communication and synchronization. The engineer will develop software for vehicle sensor devices and remote access keys, including battery power management, user activity monitoring, security, and encryption. The position also covers low-level peripheral drivers, application logic, CAN and LIN-connected devices, backward-compatible communication flows, and vehicle immobilizer systems. The engineer will support ECU software-to-hardware integration and mass manufacturing, troubleshoot manufacturing and software issues, and build cross-functional test setups and continuous integration/development tests. The role includes collaboration with Volkswagen partners and other stakeholders on vehicle-access standards, Rust-based platform tooling, and tools that use large language models to help triage issues and develop tests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Four years of experience in an occupation such as Software Engineer, Embedded RTOS Engineer, or a related occupation.
  • Experience working with LIN and NFC protocols.
  • Experience integrating CI/CD pipelines for embedded software.
  • Experience troubleshooting ECU mass-manufacturing processes.
  • Experience delivering embedded system components through the full lifecycle (end to end).
  • Experience orchestrating cross-functional software-to-hardware integration.
  • Experience leading technical root-cause analysis for software-to-manufacturing process issues.
  • Experience with embedded Linux system design and kernel-level synchronization.
  • Experience with memory-safe systems programming in Rust for platform tooling.
  • Experience with cloud-to-vehicle communication and data synchronization.
  • Experience developing firmware in C and assembly language.
  • Experience developing RTOS applications.
  • Experience working with ARM Cortex-M class microcontrollers.
  • Experience debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Experience with SPI, I2C, and UART serial protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement RTOS-based firmware for microcontrollers and software architectures for low-power BLE and NFC systems.
  • Write low-level peripheral drivers, application logic, and related embedded software.
  • Develop software for vehicle sensor devices that communicate with remote access keys over BLE and NFC and with internal vehicle modules over CAN.
  • Develop remote access key software, including battery power management, user activity monitoring, security, and encryption.
  • Oversee and develop software-to-hardware integration for ECU mass manufacturing.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues, including software issues and manufacturing processes.
  • Work cross-functionally to transfer remote access key information between users and vehicles.
  • Develop and integrate cross-functional test setups and tests for continuous integration and continuous development.
  • Architect backward-compatible software communication flows to support management of multiple concurrent remote access devices.
  • Bring up software for LIN-based devices to enhance vehicle-access functionality.
  • Design and implement embedded Linux systems focused on embedded and cloud communication and synchronization.
  • Develop tools with Rust to make platform software systems robust and reliable.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to release vehicle-access standards, including the CCC protocol.
  • Work on next-generation tooling that leverages large language models to assist with issue triage and development of tests and tools.
  • Work with Volkswagen partners to define and implement next-generation software-defined vehicle immobilizer systems focused on scalability, reliability, and security.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Eligibility for an annual company performance bonus program for full-time positions; payments are discretionary and not guaranteed.
  • Eligibility for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units, subject to board approval and applicable plan terms and vesting requirements.
  • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health coverage, retirement savings, time off, and family planning programs; offerings vary by country.
