Staff Embedded Software Engineers

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture focused on software for electric vehicles, including operating systems, zonal controllers, cloud, and connectivity solutions. Staff Embedded Software Engineers design and implement RTOS-based firmware for microcontrollers and software architectures for low-power wireless BLE and NFC systems. The role develops vehicle sensor device software that communicates with remote access keys over BLE and NFC and with internal vehicle modules over CAN, as well as remote access key software covering battery management, user activity monitoring, and security. The position also involves software security and encryption, software-to-hardware integration for mass-manufacturing of ECUs, manufacturing troubleshooting, and cross-functional work to manage information exchange between users and vehicles. Engineers develop test setups and continuous integration/development tests, design backward-compatible communication flows for multiple remote access devices, and bring up software for LIN-based devices. Additional work includes embedded Linux systems for cloud communication and synchronization, Rust-based tools, vehicle access standards such as the CCC protocol, and next-generation tooling using large language models. The role collaborates with Volkswagen partners on scalable, reliable, and secure software-defined vehicle immobilizer systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a Software Engineer, Embedded RTOS Engineer, or in a related occupation.
  • Experience working with LIN and NFC protocols.
  • Experience integrating CI/CD pipelines for embedded software.
  • Experience troubleshooting mass-manufacturing processes for ECUs.
  • Experience delivering embedded system components across the full lifecycle (E2E).
  • Experience orchestrating cross-functional software-to-hardware integration.
  • Experience leading technical root-cause analysis for software-to-manufacturing process issues.
  • Experience with embedded Linux system design and kernel-level synchronization.
  • Experience with memory-safe systems programming in Rust for robust platform tooling.
  • Experience with cloud-to-vehicle communication and data synchronization.
  • Experience developing firmware in C and assembly language.
  • Experience developing RTOS applications.
  • Experience working with ARM Cortex-M class microcontrollers.
  • Experience debugging with oscilloscope and logic analyzer test equipment.
  • Experience working with SPI, I2C, and UART serial protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement RTOS-based firmware for microcontrollers and software architecture for low-power BLE and NFC systems.
  • Write low-level peripheral drivers, application logic, and related embedded software.
