About The Position

American Freedom Insurance Company (AFIC) is a midsized, profitable, and expanding nonstandard automobile insurance company doing business in Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and licensed in Ohio. We are looking for someone that can contribute in a fast paced, growing organization. AFIC is financially strong and has earned an “A+” Superior rating from A.M. Best. The position is hybrid (or full-time in office if preferred) and the office is located in Mount Prospect, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Requirements

  • Insurance company accounting experience including statutory accounting principles is a plus
  • BA/BS degree in Accounting preferred
  • 3+ years experience in accounts payable and/or receivable
  • Experience with QuickBooks a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially advanced Excel skills with V-Look Ups and Pivot Tables experience
  • Strong work ethic and ability to innovate

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable
  • Review bank payments for accuracy, including Positive Pay
  • Lead collection of overdue balances including emailing/calling insurance agents when necessary
  • Update collections spreadsheet 2x/month
  • Account for bad debt write-offs
  • Enter payments into accounting software
  • Run month-end reports
  • Reconcile workpapers
  • Initiate Electronic Funds Transfer of commission payments
  • Make journal entries for commissions, refunds, fees, chargebacks, etc.
  • Print and email agency statements and summaries
  • Reconcile producer payments, bank deposits, refunds and workpapers, including collections
  • Review invoices to confirm amounts are approved/accurate and prepare and issue weekly expense checks
  • Ensure financial data complies with professional and regulatory standards
  • Identify and implement process improvements
  • Collaborate with other units to gather, analyze, and interpret relevant information
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
