About The Position

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides high-quality, free civil legal services to low‑income individuals and families in 114 counties across North and West Texas. Our mission is to ensure equal access to justice and improve the lives of low-income communities by providing high-quality legal representation, strategic litigation, valuable legal advice and meaningful collaborations, outreach, and community education. LANWT seeks a dynamic, self‑motivated Staff Accountant with vision, initiative, and a strong commitment to the Non-Profit sector to join our accounting team.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required, with a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
  • Experience with accounting software such as Abila MIP, QuickBooks, or similar nonprofit accounting systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including using formulas, spreadsheets, and basic financial analysis tools.
  • Experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit preparation.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred, with a minimum of two (2) years of accounting experience; nonprofit or grant accounting experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of financial transactions.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries, including payroll allocations, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Perform monthly and year‑end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Complete bank and balance‑sheet account reconciliations with proper supporting documentation.
  • Record, track, and reconcile fixed asset activity, including depreciation.
  • Maintain accounting records for both restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Track grant expenditures and ensure expenses align with funding agreements, budgets, and reporting requirements.
  • Support grant reporting and compliance by preparing schedules and documentation as needed.
  • Serve as backup for accounts payable processing as needed.
  • Prepare payroll‑related journal entries and allocate personnel costs across funding sources.
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer with the annual audit, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Support the maintenance of internal controls and ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and funder requirements.
  • Participate in process improvements to strengthen accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with the accounting team to improve and better integrate financial systems and software.
  • Communicate effectively with internal staff to resolve discrepancies and support financial transparency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer.
