We’re looking for a Staff Accountant to support a best-in-class accounting organization as Duolingo grows. You’ll own defined portions of the monthly close, prepare reconciliations with clear support, and help strengthen processes and controls so our financials are accurate, timely, and audit‑ready. You’ll partner with FP&A and cross‑functional teams, communicate status and issues clearly, and contribute to practical automation in our tools and workflows. This role is based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of progressive accounting experience (public accounting and/or public company industry) with hands‑on month‑end close responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of US GAAP and accounting month-end close best practices; strong communication and documentation habits.
  • Experience preparing journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations with clear, complete support.
  • Proficiency with Google Sheets/Excel and an ERP (e.g., NetSuite) and comfort learning new tools (e.g., BlackLine).
  • Clear, concise communication skills and the ability to collaborate across Accounting and cross‑functional partners.
  • Ability to work on‑site in Pittsburgh, PA.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with operational accounting areas like revenue and receivables, intercompany accounts, accrued expenses, accounts payable, or employee compensation in a public‑company environment.
  • Exposure to SOX controls and providing audit support with strong, audit‑ready documentation practices.
  • Hands‑on experience with NetSuite plus reconciliation tooling (e.g., BlackLine or similar).
  • Background in consumer tech or subscription businesses and interest in process automation using AI.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post routine and non‑routine journal entries with proper support; ensure accuracy and timely submission within tight close timelines.
  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts monthly, maintain audit‑ready documentation, and promptly resolve reconciling items.
  • Assist with P&L variance analyses; surface drivers and provide clear, concise explanations to FP&A and business partners.
  • Perform all processes and procedures in accordance with Duolingo policy and SOX controls.
  • Identify practical automation/efficiency opportunities in our tools (e.g., ERP and reconciliation platforms) to shorten close timelines and reduce manual work.
