Sr. Software Systems Validation Engineers

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture focused on technology for software-defined vehicles, including operating systems, zonal controllers, cloud and connectivity solutions. The Sr. Software Systems Validation Engineer will perform low-level system profiling and performance testing on embedded hardware, firmware, and image signal processors. The role focuses on identifying performance bottlenecks, ensuring thermal efficiency, and validating stability under real-world automotive conditions. The engineer will validate firmware and hardware integration across camera models and embedded system configurations; conduct long-duration and stress testing; and work with hardware and firmware engineers on system requirements and compatibility. The role also develops and executes hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) tests, validates AI model deployment in firmware, and tests GenAI and computer vision models for accuracy, latency, and robustness across varied environmental conditions. Test automation covers unit, functional, stress, and end-to-end testing. Domestic and international travel is required approximately 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a systems engineer, embedded software developer, or related occupation.
  • Experience with software or embedded systems testing focused on camera systems, computer vision, and/or low-level firmware.
  • Experience with testing frameworks and tools used in embedded and AI testing environments.
  • Experience performing hardware-software integration testing and knowledge of embedded software debugging.
  • Experience translating OEM specifications into detailed test plans and validation procedures.
  • Experience identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks.
  • Experience in embedded systems testing, including firmware, hardware interaction, and low-level performance profiling.
  • Experience using performance and thermal profiling tools for embedded systems.
  • Experience with diagnostics and SOVD, UDS (ISO 14229), OpenCV, automation test development, TestRail, infotainment release testing, and OTA validation.
  • Experience with C/C++, Python, and automotive software integration.
  • Experience managing and maintaining automation pipelines for validation and release testing activities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct system profiling and performance testing on embedded hardware, firmware, and image signal processors to identify bottlenecks, assess thermal efficiency, and validate stability.
  • Test firmware and hardware integration across camera models and embedded system configurations.
  • Execute long-duration and stress tests under varied conditions.
  • Collaborate with hardware and firmware engineers to understand system-level requirements and ensure hardware-software compatibility.
  • Develop and execute HIL test setups to simulate automotive conditions and validate camera system interactions.
  • Implement SIL testing for embedded software and AI models, and identify issues before hardware integration.
  • Validate AI model deployment and integration within firmware across camera hardware configurations and OEM specifications.
  • Test and validate GenAI and computer vision models for accuracy, latency, and robustness in diverse conditions, including low light and high motion.
  • Develop and execute test cases for model training, deployment, and edge-case handling.
  • Write test automation scripts for unit, functional, stress, and end-to-end testing.
  • Travel domestically and internationally approximately 25% of the time.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Eligibility for an annual company performance bonus program for full-time positions; payments are discretionary and not guaranteed.
  • Eligibility for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), subject to board approval and applicable plan terms.
  • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health coverage, retirement savings, time off, and family planning programs; offerings vary by country.
