Sr. Thermal Controls Systems Engineers

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies•Irvine, CA
•$135,000 - $203,000

About The Position

Join the Thermal Control System team developing advanced algorithms to optimize thermal management for powertrains, battery packs using heat pumps, and cabin HVAC systems. The role applies thermal and controls engineering expertise to define requirements for embedded software implementation and collaborates with designers, engineers, manufacturing teams, firmware developers, service personnel, Vehicle Attributes, and Hardware Development engineers to ensure subsystems meet requirements and function effectively together. The engineer translates high-level feature requests into detailed controller software, sensor, and actuator requirements, and drives implementation, testing, and release. The role also involves researching control algorithms, developing control-oriented simulation models to refine strategies, maintaining system and functional documentation, supporting safety analysis, and designing and monitoring controller validation across HIL, SIL, and vehicle-level testing.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in any occupation as a thermal development and analysis engineer.
  • Experience with control systems fundamentals and their application to the thermal domain.
  • Experience with heat transfer and thermodynamics, including familiarity with heat exchangers, compressors, valves, pumps, fans, and subsystem interactions.
  • Experience developing control-oriented dynamic system models of thermal and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience using MATLAB, Simulink, and Python.
  • Experience developing test cases for SIL, HIL, and vehicle-level tests, and conducting data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, manufacturing teams, firmware developers, and service personnel to define requirements for embedded software implementation.
  • Work with Vehicle Attributes and Hardware Development engineers to ensure subsystems have appropriate requirements, interfaces, and interactions for vehicle functions.
  • Translate high-level feature requests into detailed controller software, sensor, and actuator requirements, and drive implementation, testing, and release.
  • Research and analyze control algorithms and develop control-oriented simulation models to refine control strategies.
  • Create and maintain system boundary diagrams, function allocation documents, state machines, and sequence diagrams.
  • Develop and maintain controller FMEA, conduct fault tree analysis, and support functional safety requirement development.
  • Design controller validation test cases and monitor test coverage across HIL, SIL, and vehicle-level testing.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary
  • Eligibility for an annual company performance bonus program for full-time positions; payments are discretionary and not guaranteed.
  • Eligibility for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), subject to board approval and applicable plan terms.
  • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health coverage, retirement savings, time off, and family planning programs; offerings vary by country.
