Sr. Infrastructure Design Engineer

Blue Shield of North Carolina•Durham, NC

About The Position

Responsible for engineering complex aspects of physical and cloud-hosted data center infrastructure, including network, compute, storage, platform, middleware, database, and telephony. The role independently analyzes current and future requirements to design data center infrastructure, networking, and telephony systems, assessing technical feasibility and economic considerations. It develops and maintains technical standards, procedures, and documentation, and analyzes operational data and directs proof-of-technology efforts to establish standards for new designs or changes to existing equipment, systems, and processes. The engineer partners with technical, business, project, and management staff to plan and assess infrastructure designs and physical data center requirements, evaluate impacts, and resolve design problems. The position focuses on independently planning, designing, engineering, and maintaining enterprise Elastic Stack solutions. It serves as a technical subject matter expert for Elastic architecture, upgrades, performance, capacity, data ingestion, integrations, and troubleshooting. The engineer develops enterprise logging, search, analytics, dashboards, alerting, and observability solutions; supports integrations across applications, infrastructure, databases, networks, and cloud environments; and develops automation to improve platform administration and efficiency. The role also provides guidance to IT teams, expertise on complex production issues, technical direction to less experienced team members as needed, and contributes to platform resiliency, performance, standards, lifecycle plans, and the enterprise observability strategy. The work arrangement follows Blue Cross NC’s Hybrid Flex or Remote Flex approach, depending on the nature of the work and distance from its Durham headquarters. Hybrid Flex roles require at least two office days per week; Remote Flex roles involve virtual work with a few in-office visits each year. Onsite expectations are discussed during the interview process.
