About The Position

Harell is hiring its first Senior Field Application Scientist to serve as the scientific advisor to teams training models on its platform. The role combines bioinformatics, computational biology, and machine learning expertise with direct customer support. You will help researchers understand Harell’s data, select datasets suited to their models, train their first model, and troubleshoot performance issues while remaining close to the science. The position includes creating guides, sample notebooks, and self-serve resources; debugging PyTorch and Hugging Face training jobs; and tuning workloads on H100 and H200 systems. You will relay customer friction to engineering and help shape the product roadmap. You will also help develop blind benchmarks and competitions to measure model progress against a common standard. This is a computational, customer-facing role—not wet-lab work, sales, or pure research. Most work is virtual, with occasional travel to customer sites and conferences. The role is based in Bellevue, Washington; relocation assistance is not provided.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, or machine learning on biological data; industry or academic experience is accepted, including graduate research.
  • Experience training and debugging models in PyTorch, Hugging Face, or a similar framework.
  • Experience running training jobs on GPUs or a cluster, such as SLURM or cloud GPUs, and ability to explain why a job runs slowly.
  • Interest in working with customers and helping other scientists succeed with their models.
  • Experience collaborating with people outside one’s own team, such as other labs, partner companies, core facility users, or cross-functional groups.
  • Ability to make complex topics clear to others.
  • Clear technical writing demonstrated through guides, notebooks, protocols, or documentation used by others.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with protein, antibody, TCR, immune repertoire, or binding affinity data.
  • Experience moving training code across GPU generations, CUDA and driver versions, or mixed precision.
  • Experience with AWS or GCP, Linux, or Docker.
  • Startup or zero-to-one experience.
  • Consulting, core facility, or other customer-facing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Explain how Harell datasets were generated, what they measure, their strengths and limitations, and help researchers match data to their models.
  • Help researchers reach their first trained model by creating getting-started guides, sample notebooks, and self-serve resources.
  • Diagnose underperforming models by investigating training code, GPU setup, and data issues.
  • Debug PyTorch and Hugging Face jobs and tune workloads on H100 and H200 systems.
  • Translate customer friction into actionable input for engineering and help shape the product roadmap.
  • Help build blind benchmarks and competitions that measure models against a common standard.
  • Support customers virtually and travel occasionally to customer sites and conferences.
