About The Position

Henderson Building Solutions is seeking a Sr. Commissioning Technician to join its Commissioning team in Lenexa, Kansas. The position executes building commissioning and retro-commissioning tasks, including field observation and testing, report generation, and project planning. The technician manages programs or projects, coordinates site visits, attends meetings, and communicates with customers and subcontractors to support project success. The role also assists with employee training, schedule generation, and staffing requirements.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and typically 4 years of professional experience in commissioning or testing/balancing required; 8 years of experience required without a degree.
Valid driver’s license.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work with a moderate amount of independence, with occasional supervision and mentoring as needed.
Ability to understand drawings and specifications and how they translate into a building.
Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities as they relate to commissioning.
Strong knowledge of automation and controls systems, HVAC systems, plumbing, fire alarm/life safety systems, lighting and lighting controls, and test and balance.
Understanding of ASHRAE, ACG, and LEED commissioning requirements.
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam.
Ability to read and understand blueprints.
Significant travel, approximately 75% of the time, and flexibility to travel with little notice.
Ability to work varying shifts depending on the project, including nights or weekends.
Ability to be on one’s feet all day and climb ladders.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant construction or engineering field preferred; examples include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Science, Construction Engineering, or Construction Management.
Commissioning certification preferred, such as NEBB TAB Tech or NEBB Cx Tech.

Responsibilities

Create owner project requirements, construction plans, and specifications.
Review drawings and maintain a record of comments.
Generate equipment checklists and tests.
Lead and attend commissioning meetings.
Conduct site visits to complete pre-functional test checklists.
Generate site observation and issues reports.
Review equipment submittals and maintain a record of comments.
Conduct site visits to complete functional performance tests.
Generate final reports.
Visit sites to troubleshoot issues.
Assess equipment operation and conditions.
Generate reports summarizing site visits and equipment condition and providing recommendations.
Develop and maintain client relationships.
Create proposals for work based on RFPs or owner requests.
Set up projects and folders.
Coordinate site-visit schedules with contractors and clients.
Determine staffing requirements for projects.
Manage project billing and budgets.
Mentor or train employees as needed.
Schedule and coordinate work for project staff.
Assist other technicians with on-site questions.
