About The Position

The Special Projects Supervisor is responsible for supervising the Special Projects team within the Grounds Department. This role involves overseeing a variety of tasks including the removal of large and unusual litter, cleaning and maintenance of shelters and event spaces, pressure washing of surfaces, routine Dog Park tasks, and other unspecified duties for the overall upkeep of the park. The supervisor develops and executes daily plans, coordinates with management on waste removal, and ensures event spaces are prepared. They also manage the Dog Park's maintenance, assist with signage, and act as the main point of contact for the grounds department on weekends. Additionally, the role involves managing inventory, operating grounds vehicles and equipment, performing maintenance on equipment, ensuring drains and catch basins are clear, and assisting other teams within and outside the department. The supervisor is also responsible for resolving day-to-day issues, maintaining effective working relationships, promoting safety programs, investigating work orders and customer complaints, and possessing knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and supervisory techniques. Strong communication skills are essential for one-on-one and group interactions.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted driver’s license
  • 2 years or more of work related to grounds maintenance or custodial duties
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and in group situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team with the removal of all large, unusual litter, cleaning and maintenance of shelters and event spaces, pressure washing of surfaces, Dog Park routine tasks, and other unspecified tasks for the overall upkeep of the park.
  • Develops and executes a daily plan for the completion of all special projects and assigned duties, as well as ones that may arise throughout the workday.
  • Assist with the removal of atypical trash and debris dumped in the park. Coordinate directly with the Grounds Manager regarding large waste removal needs.
  • Coordinates cleaning and maintenance of all shelters, and event spaces ahead of rented events.
  • Oversees pressure washing of areas, coordinating times, equipment, and procedures depending on what needs treatment.
  • Manages the maintenance of Dog Park, including pressure washing surfaces, cleaning hair out of the gutters, refilling dog poop bags, and any other routine tasks.
  • Assist with the fixing, removal, and replacement of signage around the park.
  • Functions as the main point of contact for the grounds department on weekends when the Grounds Manager is not present, and reports any issues immediately to the manager.
  • Responsible for inventory and reporting of all special project equipment and supplies needs to the Grounds manager for ordering.
  • Operates all equipment needed to efficiently perform special projects duties.
  • Operates all grounds vehicles needed to efficiently remove trash, straighten signs, spread rocks, etc. on park grounds, such as loaders, skid steers, and dump trailers.
  • Assists and oversees the daily cleaning and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
  • Ensures drains and catch basins are clean and free of debris, as needed and ahead of inclement weather.
  • Assists other teams within the department with simple jobs such as treespotting for the Arborist, trench digging for the Irrigation Specialist, transportation of plants or materials for the Horticulture team, etc.
  • Assists other teams outside the department with special tasks such as putting up lights for CITO or putting out barricades, etc.
  • Resolves day-to-day questions or problems regarding equipment, materials, methods and procedures required to complete projects.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all park staff, contractors and the public.
  • Supports and actively promotes New Orleans City Park safety programs.
  • Investigates and responds to work orders and customer complaints promptly and tactfully.
  • In conjunction with the Grounds manager, conduct performance reviews for special projects staff.
  • Establishes team member tasks and duties, ensuring proper time management.
  • Performs follow-up field inspections to ensure completion of team member tasks.
  • Schedules and prioritizes manpower and projects.
  • Assists with budgeting, inventory and scheduling of special projects staff.
  • Trains staff on all equipment and vehicles needed for the operation of special projects.
  • Issues all safety equipment and tools to staff, as needed.
  • Ensures all equipment is clean and undamaged at the end of the day and properly stored and put away.
  • Ensures that all team members adhere to all park policies.
