Special Education Support Professional (Spanish Speaking) - 0.6875 FTE at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary
About The Position
The Special Education Support Professional supports students in the Spanish classroom at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary, part of the Sioux Falls School District’s Spanish Immersion Program. The role provides individual and small-group practice of teacher-selected skills in special education and/or regular classrooms, reinforces instructional and behavioral objectives, and supports students at school and on community outings. The position may also provide personal care to students with daily living needs and help maintain student records. This is a 0.6875 FTE position working 27.5 hours per week for nine months, Monday through Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Starting pay is $18.42 per hour. A $1,000 sign-on bonus is available.
Requirements
- Two years of post-high-school education or higher, or the ability to pass a standardized test approved by the State of South Dakota for designated Education Assistant positions.
- At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills and knowledge of strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Spanish-speaking ability.
- Experience with behavior management.
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
Responsibilities
- Support students within the Spanish classroom.
- Escort students to transportation and other areas of the building.
- Provide personal care as needed to students with daily living needs, such as toileting, feeding, and physical management.
- Review and practice teacher-taught skills with students individually and in small groups in special education and/or regular classrooms.
- Work with students at school and on community outings.
- Prepare instructional materials as directed or selected by the teacher.
- Reinforce instructional and behavioral objectives.
- Provide clerical assistance with student records, including charting, assignments, attendance, and progress-note data.
- Assist with student supervision during recess, lunch, and on the playground.
- Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
