About The Position

The Special Education Support Professional works at John F. Kennedy Elementary to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs. The role provides assistance to students individually and in small groups, in special education and regular classrooms, as well as at school and on community outings. The position is 0.8125 FTE, 32.5 hours per week, for 9 months, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid break. Starting pay is $18.42 per hour. A $1,000 sign-on bonus is available. Benefits are available for positions of 20 hours per week or more. A post-offer criminal background check is required.

Requirements

Two years of post-high-school education or higher, or the ability to pass a standardized test approved by the State of South Dakota for designated Education Assistant positions.
At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills and knowledge of strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
Experience with behavior management.
Ability to meet the stated physical requirements, including occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force.

Responsibilities

Escort students to transportation and other areas of the building.
Provide personal care as needed to students with daily living needs, including toileting, feeding, and physical management.
Review and practice teacher-taught skills with students one-to-one and in small groups in special education and/or regular classrooms.
Work with students at school and on community outings.
Prepare instructional materials as directed or selected by the teacher.
Reinforce instructional and behavioral objectives.
Provide clerical assistance with student records, including charting, assignments, attendance, and data for progress notes.
Assist with student supervision during recess, lunch, and on the playground.
Maintain confidentiality of students and their families.
Perform other duties as assigned.
