About The Position

Working under the supervision of the Area Solid Waste Section Manager and senior engineering staff, the Solid Waste Designer supports the planning, design, permitting, and construction of solid waste facilities and infrastructure projects. The role develops and maintains design documents, construction plans, exhibits, and technical drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related design software. It works closely with engineers, project managers, and technical specialists to deliver design solutions for municipal solid waste landfills, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, landfill gas systems, leachate management systems, and related infrastructure. The position offers opportunities to build specialized expertise in solid waste facility design and project delivery. The designer supports production of engineering drawings and Civil 3D models, site development and utility design packages, quantity calculations, earthwork analyses, cost estimates, permit exhibits, and construction documents. The role also coordinates multidisciplinary design work, incorporates review comments, supports bid and construction packages, conducts site visits, and assists with construction-phase updates and record drawings. It includes maintaining proficiency with design technologies, supporting CAD and digital workflow improvements, and developing knowledge of solid waste facility engineering and construction practices.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree.

5+ years of experience supporting solid waste, civil, environmental, or site development projects.

Nice To Haves

Experience with municipal solid waste landfills, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, landfill gas systems, or leachate management systems.
Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, including surface modeling, grading design, alignments, profiles, corridors, and earthwork calculations.
Experience preparing permit exhibits and regulatory submittal graphics.
Familiarity with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS.
Experience with drone survey data, point clouds, aerial imagery, and terrain modeling.
Knowledge of stormwater management and erosion control design.
Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Familiarity with construction documentation, record drawings, and construction-phase support.
Experience developing CAD standards, templates, and design workflows.

Responsibilities

Prepare engineering design drawings, construction plans, profiles, details, exhibits, and technical figures for solid waste infrastructure projects.
Develop and maintain Civil 3D models, surfaces, alignments, corridors, grading plans, and utility layouts.
Support preparation of site development, grading, drainage, erosion control, stormwater, and utility design packages.
Assist engineers with quantity calculations, earthwork analyses, cost estimate development, and construction document preparation.
Prepare permit exhibits, presentation graphics, and regulatory submittal drawings.
Organize and maintain project drawing files, standards, templates, and design documentation.
Ensure drawings and deliverables comply with company drafting standards, client requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and other design staff to support project execution.
Incorporate design comments and revisions from engineering reviews, clients, and regulatory agencies.
Assist with multidisciplinary coordination across civil, environmental, geotechnical, structural, and electrical disciplines.
Support preparation of bid documents and construction packages.
Participate in project meetings and design coordination efforts.
Conduct site visits to collect field information and support project development.
Assist with verification of existing conditions, facility layouts, and construction progress.
Support construction-phase activities by preparing record drawings and design revisions.
Coordinate drawing updates resulting from field observations and contractor requests.
Maintain proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design technologies.
Support development and implementation of CAD standards, templates, and best practices.
Assist with BIM, GIS, and digital design workflows where applicable.
Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, quality, and consistency across projects.
Develop expertise in solid waste facility engineering and construction practices, including landfill design, transfer station facilities, grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility design.
