About The Position

The Solid Waste Operator operates vehicles and equipment used to collect and dispose of solid waste. The operator collects waste on a designated commercial or residential route, deposits refuse and debris at the city landfill, and ensures collection vehicles are properly equipped and serviced for routes.

The primary schedule is Monday through Friday, either 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM or 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Depending on workload, work may begin as early as 5:00 AM and end as late as 5:00 PM. Some overtime, Saturday work, and holiday shifts are required.

Requirements

• Possess an appropriate, valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License.
• Be able to work holiday and Saturday shifts as scheduled.
• Be able to withstand exposure to extreme and variable weather conditions.
• Be able to lift and carry moderate to heavy waste materials for short durations.

Responsibilities

• Operate rear-load, automated side-load, front-load, roll-off, and hook-lift trucks, along with other powered equipment used to collect, recycle, and dispose of commercial and residential solid waste, including trash, recyclables, and yard waste.
• Assist with routine maintenance of division vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
• Participate in manual collection of waste and debris, including lifting and carrying moderate to heavy materials for short durations.
• Maintain cleanliness and conduct daily preventive and routine maintenance checks of assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Provide leadership on assigned routes.
• Deposit collected refuse and debris at the city landfill and ensure collection vehicles are properly equipped and serviced for routes.
