About The Position

The Solid Waste Collection position operates refuse collection vehicles and related equipment to collect and dispose of refuse, recycling, and other materials. Work is performed under the general direction of a foreman or other supervisory personnel. The position includes residential and commercial refuse collection, transportation of large commercial containers to landfills, and routine vehicle and container maintenance. The hourly wage is $24.56, with an additional $3.95 per hour paid by the City of Great Falls to the union pension. The role may also involve operating trucks and heavy equipment for snow and ice removal, sanding, and hauling materials to and from work sites. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a 40-hour work week. Normal hours are Monday through Friday, with mandatory overtime and possible weekend and holiday work. Travel is primarily local during the business day, including transportation of materials to the landfill.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement and other special licensure or equipment certifications as required.
Substantial knowledge of the use of power and hand tools.
Substantial knowledge of the operation of heavy motorized maintenance equipment and vehicles.
Availability to work mandatory overtime.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Must be registered with the FMCSA Clearinghouse; employers of CDL drivers must query the Clearinghouse to verify that the driver is not prohibited from operating commercial motor vehicles or performing other safety-sensitive functions.
Ability to perform heavy physical work and lift and carry up to 100 pounds at one time.
Hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate power and hand tools, motorized construction and maintenance equipment, and a motor vehicle.
Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, or two-way radio, and to see and read instructions and reports.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in sanitation operations is desirable.
Two years of experience in street construction, maintenance, and repair is desirable.

Responsibilities

Operate refuse collection vehicles to collect refuse from residential and commercial customers.
Transport large commercial refuse containers to landfills for disposal.
Perform routine vehicle maintenance, including daily per-trip inspections and weekly greasing and washing.
Perform minor repairs and upkeep on refuse containers.
Perform general maintenance related to refuse collection, disposal, and recycling.
May operate trucks and heavy equipment for snow and ice removal, sanding, and hauling materials to and from work sites.
Report to work on time and fully prepared on scheduled workdays.
