LABORER - SOLID WASTE
About The Position
The Laborer - Solid Waste performs semi-skilled and manual labor to collect residential refuse and assist the Driver in providing prompt, courteous waste removal services throughout the city. The role includes riding on a commercial garbage truck along a designated route, safely loading and disposing of waste, operating the truck’s packing mechanisms, and helping maintain the vehicle and equipment. The Laborer also interacts professionally with customers and dispatchers, monitors refuse for unacceptable items, cleans spill areas, completes vehicle inspections, and works to meet productivity standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- No previous relevant work experience is required.
- No previous supervisory experience is required.
- No certifications or licenses are required.
Nice To Haves
- Previous solid waste experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Collect residential refuse throughout the city using a large commercial truck.
- Safely load waste and carry bags and containers for disposal.
- Ride on the garbage truck to assist the Driver on a designated route.
- Operate packing mechanisms, levers, and handles to load and compress refuse.
- Clean, maintain, and perform minor repairs on the issued truck.
- Interact courteously with customers, dispatchers, and others to support timely and professional service.
- Monitor waste for unacceptable items and clean spill areas according to safety standards.
- Complete pre- and post-operation inspections and report safety issues as needed.
- Meet required productivity standards for efficient customer service.
- Collect bags or approved items from residents' homes.
- Clean the outside of the truck, grease truck bearings, and clean equipment.
