Software Validation Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Redwood Materials is hiring a Software Validation Engineer for its Software Validation team, which helps ensure the safety, resilience, and deployment readiness of its grid-scale energy systems. The engineer will bridge software and physical systems by designing and maintaining Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments used to stress-test power electronics and site controllers. The role focuses on building automated validation frameworks to identify edge cases before products reach the field and ensure reliability. The engineer will develop and scale high-fidelity simulations of battery assets and grid conditions, create automated Python test suites, define and execute verification and validation plans, and integrate SIL/HIL testing into CI/CD pipelines. The position also includes designing custom HIL interface hardware and wiring, and collaborating with firmware and systems teams to investigate validation failures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in software validation or test automation for hardware-focused systems.
  • Proven experience with real-time simulation platforms such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or dSPACE.
  • Deep understanding of modeling power-electronics components in a virtual environment.
  • Expert proficiency in Python, particularly for test-automation frameworks such as Pytest.
  • Familiarity with Rust and C/C++ for navigating embedded codebases.
  • Comfort working in a high-voltage lab environment.
  • Proficiency with standard lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, and electronic loads.
  • Familiarity with digital protocols such as CAN, SPI, and Ethernet.
  • A systematic approach to finding critical edge cases in complex state machines and control loops.
  • Experience with Git, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, and Docker.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and scale SIL and HIL environments using platforms such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or similar.
  • Develop automated test suites in Python and move validation from manual processes to a scalable automated framework.
  • Define and execute verification and validation plans for site-controller and embedded-power-electronics software under normal and fault conditions.
  • Integrate automated HIL/SIL testing into CI/CD pipelines to provide feedback to development teams and act as a production-readiness gate.
  • Design custom interface hardware and wiring for HIL benches to connect physical controller I/O to simulated power stages.
  • Work with firmware and systems teams to debug validation failures using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and telemetry logs.
