Software Validation Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•$152,500 - $342,500

About The Position

Redwood Materials is expanding beyond battery recycling to build a circular energy ecosystem and develop software-defined energy assets. The Software Validation team ensures that these systems are safe, resilient, and ready for grid-scale deployment. The Software Validation Engineer bridges software and physical systems by designing and maintaining Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments for testing power electronics and site controllers. The role builds automated frameworks to uncover edge cases before deployment and help ensure products meet high reliability standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in software validation or test automation for hardware-focused systems.
  • Proven experience with real-time simulation platforms such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or dSPACE, and understanding of modeling power-electronics components in a virtual environment.
  • Expert proficiency in Python, particularly for test automation frameworks such as Pytest.
  • Familiarity with Rust and C/C++ for navigating embedded codebases.
  • Comfort working in a high-voltage lab environment.
  • Proficiency with standard lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, and electronic loads.
  • Knowledge of digital protocols such as CAN, SPI, and Ethernet.
  • Experience finding critical edge cases in complex state machines and control loops.
  • Experience with Git, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, and containerization tools such as Docker.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and scale SIL and HIL environments that simulate battery assets and grid conditions, using platforms such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or similar.
  • Develop automated test suites in Python and transition validation processes from manual intervention to a scalable automated framework.
  • Define and execute Verification and Validation plans to verify site-controller and embedded power-electronics software requirements under normal and fault conditions.
  • Integrate automated HIL and SIL testing into CI/CD pipelines to provide feedback to development teams and act as a production-readiness gate.
  • Design custom interface hardware and wiring for HIL benches, connecting physical controller I/O to simulated power stages.
  • Collaborate with firmware and systems teams to debug validation failures using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and telemetry logs.
