Battery Software & Controls Integration Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•$152,000 - $287,000•Onsite

About The Position

Redwood Materials is seeking a hands-on Battery Software & Controls Integration Engineer to help develop grid-scale energy storage systems from diverse second-life automotive batteries and new assets. The role combines electrochemistry, embedded battery-management-system (BMS) firmware, and high-voltage pack hardware. It involves bringing up heterogeneous OEM battery packs in the lab, reverse-engineering proprietary BMS architectures, validating native battery state-estimation algorithms, and integrating Redwood’s battery control and estimation software to safely maximize performance from aged and mixed-chemistry assets. The engineer will also act as a technical counterpart to automotive OEMs, defining firmware hooks and safety handshakes for stationary grid operation. This position is based in Redwood Materials’ San Francisco office and follows an onsite work model.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical/Electrochemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in BMS firmware or controls development, battery-pack bring-up, or EV/BESS battery integration.
  • Practical knowledge of lithium-ion battery physics, including LFP and NMC chemistries; equivalent circuit modeling; EKF/UKF; Coulomb counting; dynamic power/current limits; cell-balancing topologies; and high-voltage safety architecture.
  • Proven ability to bring up an undocumented or partially documented battery pack.
  • Expertise with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, CANalyzer/CANoe/Busmaster, high-voltage power supplies or cyclers, and diagnostic protocols and interfaces including UDS, CCP/XCP, J1939, CAN/CAN-FD, Automotive Ethernet, and Modbus.
  • Strong Rust and C/C++ programming skills in real-time embedded and Linux environments.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and data-analysis or modeling tools such as Pandas and SciPy to assess BMS performance against laboratory cycler data.
  • Demonstrated experience as a lead technical contact with external OEM engineering teams, including the ability to analyze firmware source code or DBC files and drive engineering modifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience characterizing aged or second-life EV batteries, including capacity-fade modeling, impedance spectroscopy, or open-circuit-voltage hysteresis across different states of health.
  • Experience developing or modifying bare-metal or RTOS BMS firmware on automotive-grade microcontrollers such as TI C2000/Hercules, NXP S32K, or Infineon Aurix, and interfacing with TI, ADI/LTC, or NXP AFE chips.

Responsibilities

  • Lead benchtop and laboratory bring-up of diverse second-life EV battery packs, including probing wiring harnesses, decoding proprietary communications, simulating vehicle signals, and safely commanding pre-charge and contactor sequences.
  • Design and execute hardware and hardware-in-the-loop tests to validate OEM BMS state-of-charge, state-of-health, power-limit, resistance-growth, and fault-threshold outputs against electrochemical and thermal pack behavior.
  • Implement and integrate Redwood’s battery state-estimation, degradation-mitigation, active-balancing, and derating software in Rust or C/C++, either alongside or in place of native OEM BMS telemetry.
  • Develop embedded software abstraction layers and translation gateways that normalize pack telemetry, manage fault state machines, and interface with power conversion systems and site controllers.
  • Serve as the primary technical counterpart to automotive OEMs and Tier-1 BMS suppliers; lead engineering reviews concerning firmware builds, charge/discharge lookup tables, disconnect and fuse behavior, and deterministic command hooks.
  • Work with validation and power electronics teams to model pack dynamics, inject sensor and contactor faults on HIL benches and physical cyclers, and verify functional-safety boundaries before deployment.
