Battery Software & Controls Integration Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•$152,000 - $287,000•Onsite

About The Position

Redwood Materials is seeking a hands-on Battery Software & Controls Integration Engineer to integrate diverse second-life automotive batteries and new assets into a software-defined, grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The role combines electrochemistry, embedded BMS firmware, and high-voltage pack hardware, with work focused on bringing up heterogeneous OEM packs off-vehicle, reverse-engineering BMS architectures, and validating battery state-estimation algorithms. The engineer will assess native OEM BMS outputs—including state of charge, state of health, power limits, cell balancing, and thermal limits—against physical pack behavior. They will also integrate Redwood’s battery control and estimation algorithms to safely improve performance from aged and mixed-chemistry assets, and work with automotive OEMs to define firmware hooks and safety handshakes for stationary grid operation. The position is based in Redwood’s San Francisco office and follows an onsite work model.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical/Electrochemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in BMS firmware/controls development, battery pack bring-up, or EV/BESS battery integration.
  • Deep practical understanding of lithium-ion battery physics, including LFP and NMC; equivalent circuit modeling; EKF/UKF Kalman filtering; Coulomb counting; dynamic power/current limit calculation; cell-balancing topologies; and high-voltage safety architecture, including HVIL, isolation monitoring, contactor weld detection, and pyro-fuses.
  • Proven ability to bring up an undocumented or partially documented battery pack.
  • Expert proficiency with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, CANalyzer/CANoe/Busmaster, high-voltage power supplies or cyclers, and diagnostic protocols including UDS, CCP/XCP, J1939, CAN/CAN-FD, Automotive Ethernet, and Modbus.
  • Strong Rust and C/C++ programming skills in real-time embedded and Linux environments.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and data analysis or modeling tools such as Pandas and SciPy to evaluate BMS algorithm performance against laboratory cycler data.
  • Demonstrated success as a lead technical contact with external OEM engineering teams, with the technical ability to analyze firmware source code or DBC files and the collaborative skills to drive custom engineering modifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience characterizing aged or second-life EV batteries, including capacity-fade modeling, impedance spectroscopy, or OCV hysteresis across different SoH regimes.
  • Experience developing or modifying bare-metal or RTOS BMS firmware on automotive-grade microcontrollers such as TI C2000/Hercules, NXP S32K, or Infineon Aurix, and interfacing with AFE chips from TI, ADI/LTC, or NXP.

Responsibilities

  • Lead physical benchtop and laboratory bring-up of diverse second-life EV battery packs.
  • Probe wiring harnesses; capture and decode proprietary CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, and Ethernet traffic; spoof vehicle-level wake, keep-alive, crash, and interlock signals; and command pre-charge and main contactor sequencing to operate packs safely off-vehicle.
  • Design and execute hardware and HIL test campaigns to audit native OEM BMS algorithms under stationary grid duty cycles.
  • Validate OEM BMS state estimations, including SoC, SoH, dynamic charge/discharge power limits (SoP), internal resistance growth, and fault thresholds, against electrochemical and thermal performance.
  • Implement and integrate Redwood’s battery state-estimation, degradation-mitigation, and active balancing/derating algorithms in Rust or C/C++, either alongside or in bypass of native OEM BMS telemetry.
  • Reconcile discrepancies between legacy automotive control logic and second-life battery behavior.
  • Architect and deploy resilient, low-latency software abstraction layers and translation gateways on embedded targets to normalize pack telemetry, manage fault state machines, and interface with PCS and site controllers.
  • Serve as the primary technical counterpart to automotive OEMs and Tier-1 BMS suppliers; lead engineering reviews concerning passive-monitor firmware builds, charge/discharge lookup tables, pyrotechnic disconnect and fuse curves, and deterministic command hooks.
  • Partner with validation and power electronics teams to model pack dynamics, inject sensor and contactor faults using HIL benches and physical cyclers, and verify functional safety boundaries before field deployment.
