Battery Software Engineer

Blue Origin•Grandview, MO

About The Position

Blue Origin is hiring an experienced embedded software engineer to design, implement, and verify battery management system software for mission-critical spaceflight systems. The role is part of the battery products development organization, which takes energy storage products from concept through qualification and into volume production for programs across the company. Battery management systems monitor and protect cells, estimate state of charge and health, control contactors and power paths, detect and respond to faults, and communicate with host vehicles. The position is hardware-heavy and involves working directly with battery electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers. The engineer should be comfortable reading hardware datasheets and register maps, making performance tradeoffs, and debugging in a hands-on laboratory environment. The role involves cross-functional collaboration and may include contributing to multiple embedded software efforts at once. Blue Origin seeks candidates with technical expertise, leadership skills, commitment to quality, and enthusiasm for safe human spaceflight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 6 years of experience in the listed technical fields.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing battery management systems.
  • Embedded software design and development skills in C, C++, or Rust, with scripting experience in Linux or a similar environment.
  • Debugging skills using cross-hardware/software techniques and tools such as GDB, XSDB, GRMON, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and Wireshark; experience single-stepping through code, inspecting assembly, probing memory, and driving I/O.
  • Background in computer architecture, including understanding memory buses, cache, DMA, and CPU execution pipelines.
  • Experience with or knowledge of version control systems such as Git.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines.
  • Passion for Blue Origin's mission and vision.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in the listed technical fields.
  • Previous experience building space avionics and/or space software systems.
  • Experience with DO-178, ISO 26262, and companion-document certification guidelines.
  • Experience with FPGA development using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with software for hardware-accelerated functions such as encryption/decryption blocks, encoder/decoder blocks, image signal processors, or GPUs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including drivers.
  • Program bare-metal or operating-system-level software for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking or communications.
  • Work hands-on with spaceflight avionics hardware and debug it using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers.
  • Participate in design concepts and reviews, with attention to partitioning between hardware and software implementation.
  • Perform benchmark analysis and deploy benchmarking code to characterize hardware performance.
  • Bring up and use hardware accelerators in modern SoC devices, such as encoders, decoders, encryption engines, and image signal processing cores.
  • Perform scripting and Linux development, and work hands-on with development kits and sensor modules.
  • Define and implement embedded software for interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, and AMBA.
