Battery Software Engineer

BLUE ORIGIN•Grandview, MO
•$164,652 - $230,513

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s battery product development organization, which takes energy storage products from concept through qualification and into volume production across company programs. The engineer will develop embedded software for battery management systems that monitor and protect cells, estimate state of charge and health, control contactors and power paths, detect and respond to faults, and communicate with host vehicles. The position designs, implements, and verifies battery management system software for mission-critical spaceflight systems. It works directly with battery electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers and involves substantial interaction with hardware, including reading datasheets, interpreting register maps, making performance tradeoffs, and debugging in a laboratory. The engineer collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and may contribute to multiple embedded software efforts at once.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 6 years of experience in the listed technical fields.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing battery management systems.
  • Embedded software design and development skills in C, C++, or Rust, with Linux or similar scripting experience.
  • Debugging experience using cross-hardware/software techniques and tools such as GDB, XSDB, GRMON, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and Wireshark; ability to single-step through code, inspect assembly, probe memory, and drive I/O.
  • Background in computer architecture, including understanding of memory buses, cache, DMA, and CPU execution pipelines.
  • Experience with or knowledge of version control systems such as Git.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently with minimal direction.
  • Passion for Blue Origin’s mission and vision and commitment to quality and safe human spaceflight.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in the listed technical fields.
  • Previous experience building space avionics and/or space software systems.
  • Experience with DO-178, ISO 26262, and companion-document certification guidelines.
  • Experience with FPGA development using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Experience developing software for hardware-accelerated functions such as encryption/decryption, encoder/decoder blocks, image signal processors, or GPUs.

  • Experience with agile development methods.
  • Experience with kernel and driver development.
  • Experience with or knowledge of spaceflight hardware considerations, including radiation, orbits, shock, and vibration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including drivers.
  • Program at bare-metal or operating-system level for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking or communications.
  • Work with operating systems such as FreeRTOS, SafeRTOS, or VxWorks.
  • Work hands-on with avionics spaceflight hardware and debug it using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers.
  • Participate in design concepts and reviews, with attention to partitioning between hardware and software implementations.
  • Perform benchmark analysis and deploy benchmarking code to characterize hardware performance.
  • Bring up and use hardware accelerators in modern SoC devices.
  • Develop scripts, work in Linux, and work hands-on with development kits and sensor modules.
  • Define and implement embedded software for interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, and AMBA.
