Senior Software Engineer - Battery State Estimation

General Motors•Milford, MI
•Hybrid

About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for its Battery & High Voltage Software organization. The role focuses on designing, implementing, verifying, and evolving State-of-Charge (SOC), State-of-Health (SOH), and State-of-Power (SOP) estimation algorithms for next-generation high-voltage battery platforms. The engineer will own work from concept through production deployment and ongoing improvement, combining algorithm development, embedded software implementation, and system-level validation in virtual and physical environments. The work supports battery safety, performance, range accuracy, fast charging, longevity, and the customer experience as GM advances its Software-Defined Vehicle architecture. The position involves developing robust estimation algorithms and observers, implementing them as production-quality embedded software, and architecting modular and portable software for reuse across vehicle programs. The engineer will drive calibration strategies and model-based development, lead early verification and validation, and develop automated tests integrated into continuous-integration workflows. The role also includes cross-functional collaboration, mentoring, technical planning, and contributing to the evolution of GM’s battery estimation architecture as a scalable SDV service. The role is hybrid and requires reporting to the Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan at least three times per week. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • At least 5 years of experience delivering embedded software for high-voltage battery systems or similar complex engineering systems.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems development.
  • Hands-on production experience with SOC, SOH, and/or SOP estimation algorithms deployed in vehicles.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python, with hands-on experience in modeling, analysis, automation, and Model-Based Development workflows.
  • Demonstrated success verifying software and controls features in MIL, SIL, and HIL environments.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and cross-functional automotive programs.
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced SDV development contexts with technical ownership and accountability.
  • Experience using battery data to develop actionable insights that improve battery performance, reliability, and lifecycle characteristics.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Deep expertise in battery modeling and estimation techniques, including observer design and Kalman-filter-based approaches.
  • At least 8 years of experience delivering embedded software for high-voltage battery systems or similar complex engineering systems.
  • Hands-on experience with battery cell characterization, pack testing, and laboratory-based validation.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion chemistries such as LFP and high-nickel NMC/LMR and their aging mechanisms.
  • Experience with ETAS INCA, MDA, or similar calibration and measurement tools.
  • Experience working within Software-Defined Vehicle architectures and CI/CD-based software delivery pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and productionize battery SOC, SOH, and SOP estimation algorithms using physics-based, model-based, and hybrid data-driven techniques.
  • Develop observers and filters, including equivalent-circuit and electrochemical-informed models and Kalman-filter-based approaches, for performance across temperature extremes, power transients, sensor noise, and battery aging.
  • Incorporate calendar and cycle aging effects into estimation logic across battery lifecycles, chemistries, and pack architectures.
  • Implement estimation algorithms as production-quality embedded C/C++ software in accordance with GM safety, cybersecurity, and coding standards, including MISRA compliance.
  • Architect modular, portable software with hardware abstraction for reuse across vehicle programs and evolving electrical/electronic architectures.
  • Define and advocate calibration strategies and model-based approaches that improve robustness and maintainability while reducing complexity.
  • Lead shift-left verification, technical root-cause analysis, and validation in MIL, SIL, and HIL environments.
  • Develop automated regression, robustness, and fault-injection test suites integrated into CI pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Cell and Pack Engineering, Systems and Functional Safety, Validation, Calibration, Vehicle Performance, SDV Platform, and Research and Development teams.
  • Mentor and guide engineers, contribute to technical planning events, and help evolve GM’s battery estimation architecture as a scalable SDV service.
  • Own deliverables end to end and continually improve technical rigor, development efficiency, and software quality.
  • Use battery data to generate actionable insights that improve battery performance, reliability, and lifecycle characteristics.
