Software Engineer, Rhoda Platform

Rhoda AI•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

At Rhoda AI, the Software Engineer will help build and maintain the software foundation that keeps the company’s generalist intelligent robots running. The role works across the full onboard stack, including networking and communications, perception and control integration, data collection pipelines, and development and field-testing tools. The engineer will build infrastructure that connects onboard systems to one another, the cloud, and teleoperation and monitoring systems; maintain reliable data collection and upload pipelines; and create telemetry, observability, deployment, logging, debugging, and field-testing tools. The role also productizes the Rhoda Platform for integration with vendor robotic hardware, supports hardware bring-up and field testing, and works with ML, perception, and control engineers to meet data-quality and reliability needs for model training and deployment. The position offers work across the onboard robotics stack with a small, fast-moving team. The infrastructure developed in this role will support robot development, debugging, deployment, and improvement in the field.

Requirements

  • For experienced hires, at least 2 years of experience in robotics software engineering, embedded systems, cloud software, or a closely related field.
  • For new graduates, a solid educational background in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals in C++, Python, or Rust.
  • Experience with networking, inter-process communication (IPC), and communication protocols for hardware-software systems, such as gRPC, DDS, MQTT, or WebSockets.
  • Familiarity with cloud storage and data-upload pipelines, such as AWS, GCP, S3, or GCS.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 or similar robotics middleware in production or research contexts.
  • Ability to debug across the full stack, from driver-level issues and application behavior to distributed-system failures on live hardware.
  • Excellent engineering principles and a high standard for work deliverables.
  • Comfort working directly with physical hardware in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
  • Passion for a fast-moving and collaborative working environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building telemetry and observability systems for embedded or edge platforms.
  • Familiarity with perception pipelines or control systems and how they interact with the broader robot stack.
  • Background in streaming systems or low-latency data transport for real-time robot operation.
  • Experience with over-the-air (OTA) software updates and deployment infrastructure for robot fleets.
  • Exposure to learned perception or control models and their integration into real-time robot stacks.
  • Prior work on early-stage hardware programs, such as prototype or pre-production robots.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain networking and communication infrastructure connecting onboard robot systems to each other, the cloud, and teleoperation and monitoring systems.
  • Own data collection pipelines that capture sensor, telemetry, and behavioral data from robots and reliably upload it to cloud storage for model training.
  • Build and maintain telemetry and observability systems that provide real-time visibility into robot health, system state, and field performance.
  • Develop internal tools for robot software development, including deployment pipelines, logging infrastructure, debugging tools, and field-testing utilities.
  • Productize the Rhoda Platform to enable efficient integration with vendor robotic hardware platforms.
  • Support bring-up and field testing of new hardware revisions and debug issues across the onboard software stack.
  • Collaborate with ML, perception, and control engineers to ensure onboard systems meet data-quality and reliability requirements for model training and deployment.
