Data Platform Software Engineer

ServiceNow•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

The Database Provisioning team builds tools to safely operate and manage databases in ServiceNow data centers, including RaptorDB, a PostgreSQL-based database. Its CLI tools are used by internal operations and support teams as well as automation across ServiceNow data centers. The team delivers reliable, high-quality solutions at massive scale and works collaboratively with distributed teams in the US and Europe. New team members receive mentorship to help them become strong contributors. In this role, you will develop and improve snc-provision, an in-house framework for deploying, configuring, and operating RaptorDB (PostgreSQL) and MariaDB databases in production. The framework includes the snow CLI used by operations teams and automation, and Dojo, a fleet-wide scheduled maintenance and monitoring service. You will own well-scoped features from design through testing and delivery with guidance from senior engineers, help automate operational work across a large database fleet, and contribute to production investigations, documentation, and team learning.

Requirements

  • A solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux and an interest in learning its internals.
  • Familiarity with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MariaDB, and interest in learning how they run in production.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and curiosity about how systems fail.
  • Clear communication and comfort working with teammates across PT, ET, and CET time zones.
  • Programming experience in Ruby, Python, Go, or a similar language, plus shell scripting.
  • Experience with source control and CI/CD systems such as Git and Jenkins.
  • Experience leveraging or critically considering how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving; this may include AI-powered tools, workflow automation, analysis of AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact.
  • Typically a bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related experience; alternatively, an advanced degree without experience or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid model from the San Diego, Santa Clara, or Kirkland office; a remote option may be available.

Nice To Haves

  • Ruby experience (preferred, but not required).
  • Experience with Puppet or another configuration management tool.
  • Experience with database backups, replication, or high availability.
  • Kubernetes experience.
  • Experience with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Windsurf, or Cursor.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve snc-provision, including tools for deploying, configuring, and operating RaptorDB and MariaDB databases in production.
  • Contribute to the snow CLI used by operations teams and automation, and to Dojo, the fleet-wide scheduled maintenance and monitoring service.
  • Own well-scoped features from design through implementation, test automation, and delivery, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code and design reviews.
  • Automate operational tasks across a large database fleet, including configuration management, monitoring, and remediation.
  • Help investigate production issues such as database crashes, backup and restore failures, and performance problems; learn to drive root-cause analysis using logs, stack traces, and system data.
  • Work with operations, support, and partner engineering teams to understand requirements and turn feedback into improvements.
  • Contribute to documentation and runbooks, and share learnings with the team.

Benefits

  • Health plans, including flexible spending accounts.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Employee stock purchase plan (ESPP).
  • Matching donations.
  • Flexible time away plan.
  • Family leave programs.
  • Equity when applicable.
  • Variable/incentive compensation.
