About The Position

The Apple Services Engineering (ASE) team is responsible for powering key Apple services like the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books. This team operates at a massive scale, ensuring high performance and delivering a wide range of entertainment content globally. They build secure, end-to-end solutions, developing custom software for creative work processing, provider tools, server-side systems, and APIs for various Apple services. Engineers collaborate within Apple's unique hardware, software, and services integration, unified by a vision that includes a strong commitment to privacy. Despite the growing importance of services, these teams remain small, agile, and cross-functional, offering diverse opportunities. The role involves working on privacy-first instrumentation capabilities, bridging product management and engineering, and addressing critical questions about data collection and privacy preservation from client devices.

Requirements

  • Ability to assist in the creation and enforcement of privacy and compliance policies and guidelines across ASE and Apple.
  • 5+ years of experience working as a software engineer, technical product manager, or engineering-focused management consultant.
  • Strong software design skills, coupled with a deep knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Comfort working with large, cross-functional teams spread across multiple locations.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills: The ability to translate ambiguous high-level analytics questions into concrete engineering asks.
  • Strong prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously with overlapping deadlines.
  • 5+ years of professional experience with some or all of the following: data or analytics systems, frameworks or toolkits, Swift, Objective-C, JavaScript, C/C++, Java, TypeScript, React, Angular, Ember, Vue.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to assist in the creation and enforcement of privacy and compliance policies and guidelines across ASE and Apple.
  • Industry experience in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies for large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience with differential privacy, private data-synchronization across systems and devices, data minimization, tokenization, cryptography.

Responsibilities

  • Design, launch, and support new data tooling and standards to answer high-level analytics questions at scale.
  • Manage all aspects of software development, including brainstorming, design, analysis, development, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Define the strategy for new data infrastructure products to address high-level analytics questions at scale.
  • Create and maintain instrumentation specifications detailing field and value collection for new features across ASE products and services.
  • Collaborate with product managers, client and server engineers, data scientists/business analysts, privacy engineers and attorneys, and QA.
  • Design and implement innovative privacy-preserving systems for ASE products and services.
  • Design and develop frameworks and tools to collect analytics data from products and services on all platforms (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, visionOS, web browsers, and third-party platforms).
  • Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for client instrumentation capabilities, creating detailed specifications for engineering, data science, and QA.
  • Manage the end-to-end design, launch, and support of new data infrastructure to address complex analytics needs, including technical system design and implementation.
  • Advise business and engineering stakeholders as a data collection subject-matter expert, understanding the impact of analytics requests on server and client systems.
  • Lead discussions with privacy and legal teams to balance analytics needs with consumer privacy protection.
