About The Position

PlanetScale is rapidly growing and reinventing the database space with its platform offering both PostgreSQL and Vitess clusters. Vitess is an open-source database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL, enabling businesses to efficiently handle large-scale data workloads. PlanetScale is also bringing this scaling power to PostgreSQL with Neki. This role is for a Software Engineer focused on building the internal tools that run PlanetScale, automating manual tasks to improve efficiency for a growing company. The role involves automating incident response, on-call procedures, support workflows, and onboarding processes. This is an in-office role based at the San Francisco headquarters.

Requirements

0-2 years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent project or internship work.
Solid fundamentals in at least one of TypeScript, Ruby, or Go.
Comfortable building with AI coding tools and LLM APIs.
Ability to write scripts, small services, or automations that solve real problems.
Clear written communication.
Willing and able to work in person from our San Francisco office.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Slack's API, GitHub Actions, or similar automation platforms.
Exposure to Terraform or Kubernetes.
A side project, bot, or tool built to automate something in one's own life.

Responsibilities

Build AI-enabled tools and agents that automate manual work across engineering, support, and operations.
Write bots and integrations for Slack, PagerDuty, and other business systems.
Build internal dashboards for team visibility into operations.
Integrate LLM APIs and AI coding tools into internal systems.
Ship small, useful features quickly and iterate based on user needs.
Collaborate with senior engineers and leadership to identify and resolve operational friction.
Own projects end-to-end, including design, build, ship, and support.
