Senior Software Engineer - Tools

Watney•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Watney builds and deploys autonomous robotic systems to address labor shortages, hazardous working conditions, and operational complexity in critical infrastructure, starting with data centers. The Senior Software Engineer - Tools will build and own the tools that transform data recorded by robots in the field into data that models can learn from. These tools help engineers connect changes in robot telemetry to the moments when errors occur. The role focuses on determining which moments from real-world robot work are useful for training and which labels remain reliable under review. Data quality directly affects model quality, and the engineer will own tools that determine what enters training datasets and help reveal data patterns that can guide R&D. The position works closely with the ML team, fleet-debugging engineers, annotators, and the rest of the software team.

Nice To Haves

  • Have built an internal tool that became the way a team works.
  • Have built visualization or analysis tools for large volumes of sensor and video data.
  • Have built dataset tooling or a data pipeline used by ML engineers for training.
  • Have designed a labeling or review workflow used to annotate data at volume.

Responsibilities

  • Own the viewer engineers use to play back robot data and align telemetry with errors.
  • Own dataset curation, including the dataset API and tools for finding and grouping episodes and building training sets.
  • Build annotation tooling with the software team and evaluate whether to build or buy tools.
  • Build the quality review process for annotated data.
  • Work with the ML team, engineers who debug the fleet, and annotators who label data.
