About The Position

Prematch is looking for a software engineer with a data focus to keep football results, statistics, lineups, goals, appearances, and market values accurate and trustworthy. The role is part of the Core Systems team, where backend and data engineering work together. It involves writing Python services and production data pipelines that process match data from multiple sources into the teams, players, and statistics shown in the app. The work focuses on maintaining data quality and reliability, particularly during weekend match peaks, and understanding how grassroots football data behaves in practice. The engineer will take ownership of an existing data domain with a long history and become productive independently, with support from the team to understand its context. They will evolve data models with engineers responsible for data acquisition and processing, help data and business colleagues with technical requests and analyses, and build internal tools that let support and product colleagues check and correct data. The role also emphasizes understanding the effect of data on players and clubs, not merely whether a processing job completed successfully. The position is full-time and can be hybrid from Cologne, Berlin, or London, or remote within the EU or UK. The working language is English. The company describes remote arrangements as typically involving one to three office days per week depending on location and role; 100% remote may sometimes be possible for Tech & Product. The start date is immediate.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience as a software engineer with a data focus.
  • Experience owning a production pipeline or dataset end to end.
  • Experience building and operating production data pipelines relied on by others.
  • Experience shipping Python services with tests and code review.
  • Strong SQL skills and ability to model data cleanly in PostgreSQL or a similar database.
  • Experience owning dataset quality using checks and monitoring, and making data gaps explicit.
  • Experience making data from uncontrolled sources reliable despite inconsistent names, duplicates, late corrections, and similar issues.
  • Ability to navigate an established codebase independently, investigate its code, data, and history, and understand existing design decisions before making changes.
  • Ability to explain data problems clearly to people who do not write SQL.
  • Willingness to use coding agents in planning and development, review their output, and take ownership of shipped work.
  • Interest in understanding grassroots football and how it works.
  • Ability to work in English, the team's working language.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building ingestion pipelines from external sources such as club homepages and maintaining them as those sources change.
  • A football background, such as playing, coaching, or helping run a club.
  • Experience building dashboards or reports for non-technical users.
  • Experience with a mobile or frontend codebase; Flutter experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate football data, including results, lineups, goals, appearances, statistics, and market values.
  • Build and operate tested, monitored Python data-processing services and pipelines that turn match data from multiple sources into app data.
  • Make data quality measurable through validation, monitoring, and alerts, and resolve underlying causes of data issues.
  • Develop expertise in grassroots football data and translate its complexities into rules enforced by systems.
  • Consider how data is presented to players and clubs, as well as whether processing jobs have run successfully.
  • Shape the evolution of data models with engineers responsible for data acquisition and processing.
  • Support data and business colleagues with technical data requests, including queries, data pulls, and checks for analyses.
  • Build small internal tools that enable support and product colleagues to check and fix data themselves.

Benefits

  • Employee participation through VSOP.
  • Modern technology setup, including tools and devices needed for the work.
  • AI tools provided for day-to-day work.
  • 27 days of holiday per year.
  • Special arrangements for parents to help balance family and time off.
  • Flexible remote work, with one to three office days per week depending on role and distance; 100% remote may sometimes be possible for Tech & Product.
  • Choice of offices in Cologne, Berlin, or London, with the option to work from another company office for a period.
  • Ability to work flexibly from outside the employee's home base.
  • Regular team events.
  • Four-day company-wide offsites.
