Site Reliability Engineer II

Axon•Seattle, WA

About The Position

As a Site Reliability Engineer on the Kubernetes team in Axon's Compute Platform Engineering organization, you will help run and evolve the platform supporting Axon's products: a large global fleet of Azure AKS and Amazon EKS clusters across commercial and government clouds. The role focuses on system stability, clear documentation, and tools that make the platform easy and safe for engineering teams to use. You will own platform features end to end, from design through rollout, and participate in the team's on-call rotation. The role is based in Axon's Boston, Atlanta, or Seattle office and follows a hybrid schedule. Team members work onsite Tuesday through Friday and may work remotely on Mondays, unless they have an approved workplace accommodation. The position reports to the Engineering Manager, Compute Platform Engineering.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in platform engineering, SRE, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Experience building and operating Kubernetes platforms such as AKS, EKS, or similar in production.
  • Experience building platforms on Azure or AWS.
  • Experience with a programming language such as Python, Go, C#, Java, or similar.
  • Experience with CI/CD and Git-based workflows for automating infrastructure provisioning, builds, tests, and releases.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar), including flexible, testable modules.
  • Experience using observability tools, including metrics, logs, traces, and APM, to debug issues.
  • Experience designing tooling that simplifies operation of SaaS/PaaS systems.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI and agentic tooling to engineering or operations work.
  • Empathy for the needs of software engineers.
  • United States citizenship, required to obtain CJIS clearance for full access to US production environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GitOps using ArgoCD and Helm.
  • Experience with cluster autoscaling and cost optimization, such as Karpenter, Vertical Pod Autoscaler, or similar.
  • Experience with Kubernetes policy and security tooling, such as Kyverno or OPA/Gatekeeper.
  • Experience in government or regulated cloud environments, such as Azure Government, FedRAMP/GovRAMP, or CJIS.
  • Exposure to 24/7 high-volume systems with formal SLA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Own platform features and components end to end, including design documents and rollout plans.
  • Review teammates' changes and share operational knowledge across the team and with partner teams.
  • Build and operate robust, easy-to-use Kubernetes platforms and tooling that help engineering teams provision and run services rapidly, consistently, and securely.
  • Automate cluster provisioning, bootstrapping, upgrades, and day-2 operations using infrastructure as code and GitOps.
  • Improve reliability, operability, and cost efficiency across the fleet, including node autoscaling and right-sizing.
  • Keep the platform secure and compliant through policy enforcement, vulnerability remediation, and government-cloud requirements such as FIPS.
  • Debug problems in cloud-native distributed systems and participate in the team's on-call rotation.
  • Write performant, maintainable, clear, and concise code.
  • Write documentation and guides that enable engineers to self-serve.
  • Use agentic AI tooling to automate platform operations and accelerate engineering work.
  • Take calculated risks, champion new ideas, and cultivate your craft.
