About The Position

Bank of America is seeking an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to drive reliability, observability, and operational excellence for IBM MQ and Kafka messaging environments. The role partners with engineering, technology, infrastructure, application, and security teams to implement reliability measures, improve production services, and support large-scale distributed messaging runtimes. It combines production engineering with platform security, resilience engineering, and vulnerability remediation. The position develops reliability scripts, tools, and libraries; implements monitoring and instrumentation; supports automation and reliability improvements; and participates in incident triage, root-cause analysis, failure-scenario modeling, and an on-call rotation. It leads reliability engineering for messaging platforms operating at large scale, including EOL remediation, patching, stabilization, observability improvements, proactive fault detection, and auto-remediation. The role supports global production messaging environments and real-time, event-driven workloads. The position is first shift in the United States of America and is listed as 40 hours per week. Bank of America describes an in-office culture with role-specific flexibility based on responsibilities and business needs.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering or Production Engineering.
  • Hands-on expertise with IBM MQ, including queue managers, clustering, channels, and dead-letter queue management.
  • Hands-on expertise with Kafka or the Confluent platform, including topics, brokers, partitions, and consumer groups.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed messaging systems and runtime management.
  • Strong understanding of system reliability, scalability, and high-availability design.
  • Knowledge of messaging reliability patterns, including guaranteed delivery, retry handling, replay, and ordering.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, Prometheus, or Grafana for messaging platforms.
  • Experience with event and anomaly detection in high-volume systems.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills with Shell, Python, and PowerShell.
  • Experience managing Linux/Unix and Windows production environments.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture and messaging-based integration patterns.
  • Experience with messaging platform security, including TLS, certificates, channel authentication, and encryption.
  • Experience with vulnerability remediation and risk mitigation in production systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills in high-pressure, real-time environments, including message backlogs, latency spikes, and connection failures.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Skills listed: analytical thinking, automation, collaboration, production support, result orientation, application development, architecture, influence, project management, solution design, and Confluence.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing SRE frameworks such as SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets specifically for messaging workloads.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or containerized messaging platforms.
  • Experience with Kafka ecosystem components such as Schema Registry, Connect, and Streams.
  • Experience with advanced IBM MQ features such as Native HA and clustering.
  • Exposure to AIOps, anomaly detection, or automated remediation.
  • Experience with large-scale messaging modernization or migration programs.
  • Messaging or middleware certifications, such as IBM MQ or Kafka certifications.
  • Experience in regulated environments, such as financial services.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain reliability scripts, tools, and libraries for instrumentation, automation, and operational needs.
  • Mentor SRE resources on reliability practices and established tools and capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Development and Infrastructure teams to understand technical solutions and implement monitoring capabilities from application and system monitoring designs.
  • Partner on code changes that use common reliability libraries and tools, and help Application Production Services and Application Development teammates use them.
  • Identify vulnerabilities and opportunities to improve reliability, including investigating error rates and monitoring noise; define solutions that reduce manual support effort or improve reliability.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in major incident triage, failure-scenario modeling, and diagnosis with Problem Managers for root-cause and problem-management investigations.
  • Participate in a regular on-call rotation with Production Support teammates.
  • Lead reliability engineering for high-scale messaging platforms supporting extensive runtimes and high-volume message throughput.
  • Drive EOL remediation, patching, and stabilization across MQ queue managers and Kafka clusters.
  • Implement SRE practices, including SLIs and SLOs for message delivery, latency, and availability; incident management, escalation, and postmortems.
  • Improve observability and monitoring of messaging flows, queue depths, lag, and throughput.
  • Design proactive fault detection and auto-remediation strategies, such as dead-letter queue handling, backlog mitigation, and failover recovery.
  • Build resilient messaging platforms for real-time, event-driven workloads.
  • Support global production messaging environments with on-call rotation and escalation ownership.
  • Partner with engineering, application, and security teams to ensure reliability, scalability, and secure message transport.

Benefits

  • Affordable, competitive, and flexible benefits supporting teammates’ physical, emotional, and financial wellness.
