About The Position

GlobalFoundries is seeking a Package Reliability Engineer to support reliability methodology development and qualification execution for silicon photonics products and advanced optical packages. The engineer will evaluate reliability across interfaces connecting the photonic chip, optical fiber, package, and associated electrical, thermal, and mechanical elements. The role identifies package-level reliability risks, translates product use conditions and customer requirements into test plans and acceptance criteria, supports physics-of-failure-based acceleration models, and executes qualification activities from technology development through manufacturing release. The engineer works closely with photonics device, package development, assembly, test, product, quality, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams. The position also supports failure analysis, root-cause investigations, reliability design guidance, customer and supplier interactions, manufacturing investigations, and development of technical reports and reliability documentation. The employee is expected to perform activities safely and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Photonics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related engineering or physical science discipline.
  • Relevant package, semiconductor, photonics, optoelectronics, or product reliability experience meeting one of the following: bachelor's degree with at least 7 years of relevant experience; master's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience; or a Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or physical science discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting reliability qualification, methodology development, or failure-mechanism investigations.
  • Strong understanding of reliability physics and accelerated testing for semiconductor devices, photonic components, electronic or optical packages, and material interfaces.
  • Experience interpreting optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and material characterization data and connecting observations to physical failure mechanisms.
  • Experience with reliability statistics, lifetime projection, experiment design, and technical risk assessment.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a global matrixed environment with appropriate guidance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to communicate technical conclusions and risk to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Photonics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on knowledge of silicon photonics components and optical interfaces, such as waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, grating or edge couplers, fiber arrays, and optical attach processes.
  • Experience with advanced optical packaging, co-packaged optics, photonic integrated circuits, heterogeneous integration, or high-density electro-optical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of package materials and interfaces, including adhesives, epoxies, underfills, solder joints, metallization, passivation, optical fibers, and fiber-attach structures.
  • Experience developing or applying combined-stress and system-representative reliability tests involving temperature, humidity, mechanical load, electrical bias, and optical power.
  • Familiarity with applicable JEDEC, Telcordia, IEC, or customer-specific qualification frameworks for semiconductor, optoelectronic, and packaging reliability.
  • Experience with finite element analysis, thermal-mechanical modeling, fracture mechanics, or optical alignment tolerance analysis.
  • Knowledge of failure-analysis techniques such as cross-sectioning, microscopy, X-ray or CT, SAM, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and material or interface characterization.
  • Working knowledge of statistical and engineering analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to make data-driven technical recommendations and deliver results across multiple programs and shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Support package-level reliability strategy for silicon photonics products, covering chip-to-package, fiber-to-chip, optical attach, package materials, and relevant electrical and thermal interfaces.
  • Define qualification requirements, reliability test vehicles, test structures, stress matrices, sample plans, read points, failure criteria, and reporting methods based on product mission profile and customer use conditions.
  • Identify and prioritize failure mechanisms associated with optical coupling and attach, fiber alignment stability, adhesives and underfills, solder and interconnects, interfaces, moisture sensitivity, thermal cycling, mechanical loading, contamination, and material compatibility.
  • Develop and apply physics-of-failure methodologies and acceleration models for temperature, humidity, thermal cycling, mechanical stress, optical power, and combined-stress conditions.
  • Plan and execute package reliability evaluations, including temperature cycling, high-temperature storage, biased or unbiased humidity testing, mechanical shock and vibration, fiber pull, optical power aging, and other application-specific stresses.
  • Correlate optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and material characterization data to determine degradation drivers, failure signatures, and lifetime-limiting mechanisms.
  • Support failure analysis and root-cause investigations with cross-functional teams, recommend corrective actions, and verify effectiveness through targeted experiments.
  • Provide reliability design guidance and risk assessments during architecture, material selection, package design, process integration, and design-change reviews.
  • Develop qualification plans and reliability evidence packages that align internal requirements, applicable industry standards, and customer expectations.
  • Provide technical support for interactions with customers, suppliers, outsourced assembly and test partners, and internal stakeholders on package reliability requirements and issues.
  • Plan and manage reliability hardware, fixtures, optical and electrical test capability, and external laboratory support needed to meet program schedules.
  • Analyze reliability data using appropriate statistical methods, including Weibull or lognormal analysis, censored data treatment, degradation modeling, and uncertainty assessment.
  • Author qualification reports, technical specifications, reliability guidelines, risk assessments, and customer-facing technical summaries.
  • Share technical knowledge with engineers and technicians and contribute to consistent reliability methods and documentation practices across programs.
  • Support manufacturing excursions, yield or field-return investigations, and reliability-related change control with timely technical assessment.
  • Perform activities safely and responsibly and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.
