About The Position

This course is an introduction to literary journalism in which students study the craft of storytelling along with interviewing, reporting, and the journalist’s ethical stance. Guest speakers, field trips, writing activities and course readings will help students engage deeply with their environment and develop the skills and sensitivity required for literary reporting. Restricted to first-year students. Estimated enrolment: 25 students. Estimated TA support: None. Class schedule: Thursdays 2-5pm. Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the College.

Requirements

  • MA in journalism or related field, or relevant professional experience
  • Industry experience as a working journalist or editor of magazine, newspaper, digital, or book-length journalism, with an emphasis on literary journalism
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching journalism or professional writing

  • Publication or editorial record in journalism
  • Demonstrated interest in pedagogy
  • Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates

Responsibilities

  • Teach the full course
  • Conduct all grading
  • Prepare and submit all final marks
  • Hold office hours each week
