About The Position

This position is for a Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy for the Fall 2026 academic session. The course, PHL240H5 F - Minds and Machines, will discuss questions such as 'Can machines think and feel?' and 'Are human beings simply very complicated organic machines?' in the light of recent work on the simulation of intelligence and purposive behaviour. The position is tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolments, and is posted in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 Unit 3.

Requirements

  • PhD in-hand, preferably in philosophy.
  • Prior experience as a course instructor, preferably in Philosophy at U of T.
  • Advanced prior knowledge of the subject matter of the course and topic-related teaching experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Related research and a record of research achievement is considered an asset to this position.

Responsibilities

  • All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.
  • Completion of any course grading not already finished by December, 2026.
