About The Position

The Department of Wood Science is seeking to hire a part-time sessional lecturer for the 26W - Term 1 (September 1 to December 30, 2026). This position involves teaching WOOD 384 (Wood Sawmilling and Drying), specifically covering the "Drying" portion which constitutes 50% of the course. The material covered includes timber kiln design and operation, types of dry kilns, heat, relative humidity, and air circulation equipment, lumber stack configuration and piling strategies, drying schedules, drying defects, strategies to optimize drying, various non-conventional timber dryers, and kiln problems and maintenance. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering core lectures, leading laboratory sessions, administering exams, marking homework and lab reports, mentoring teaching assistants, and holding office hours. The expected salary for this position is $4,000 per credit, prorated at 50%.

Requirements

  • Solid background in wood drying
  • Extensive experience in safely using the experimental kiln in the Wood Fluids and Thermal Treatments laboratory
  • Hands-on experience in timber drying
  • Foundational knowledge in wood science
  • Undergraduate degree in Wood Science
  • Ph.D. in Forestry on the topic of wood drying
