About The Position

This graduate course, MMG3003Y: Genomic Methodologies, is offered within the MHSc Medical Genomics program and is restricted to students enrolled in that program. The course teaches the theory and practice of molecular biology relevant to genetic and genomic testing, covering classic, modern, and emerging genetic methods with a focus on computational techniques for analyzing genomic data. Students will gain an understanding of the scientific principles behind genomic tests, examine their limitations and applications, and develop the necessary background to understand and analyze new assays. This course is co-taught with another faculty member in the Molecular Genetics Department. The sessional lecturer will be responsible for teaching one half-term (0.5 FCE, 7 weeks) during the winter term.

Requirements

  • Hold an advanced degree (MD or PhD) in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Previous teaching experience at the University level.
  • Experience with concepts in genomic methodologies, including DNA-based methods.
  • Experience with computational pipelines for sequencing data analysis.
  • Experience using command-line programs and R packages.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 1-half term (0.5 FCE, 7-weeks) in the winter term.
  • Attend all lecture and tutorial sessions.
  • Prepare for lectures based on existing content and assignments.
  • Answer student questions.
  • Teach the course in collaboration with another professor.
  • Potentially modify existing course materials (syllabus, slides, assignments, etc.) to update them for the current year.
