This course is an introductory language course for students with little or no prior knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). It provides an immersive introduction to ASL, with a focus on basic vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and appropriate behaviours for everyday interactions in a variety of social situations. The language is taught through various immersive activities, such as lecture/discussion, interactive games, and situational conversations, supplemented with readings and videos. A significant emphasis throughout the course is placed on Deaf culture and issues facing the Deaf community. The course is scheduled to be online with an estimated enrolment of 35 undergraduates. The appointment dates are from September 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
