About The Position

This course is an introductory language course for students with minimal prior knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). It builds on the knowledge and skills gained in American Sign Language 1 and further immerses students in the language, literature, culture, and community associated with ASL. Additionally, it offers students opportunities to enhance their comprehension and production skills through content-specific conversations and interactive activities that utilize accurate ASL vocabulary, classifiers, phrases, grammatical structures, and non-manual markers across different contexts and purposes. The course is scheduled to be online with an estimated enrollment of 30 undergraduates. The appointment dates are from January 1, 2027, to April 30, 2027. The course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of methods as determined by the Faculty or Department.

Requirements

• Fluent in ASL and English
• Documentation of native or near-native fluency in ASL
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and/or lived experience with a Deaf community
• Minimum level of proficiency in ASL is Level 5 of ASLPI
• Familiarity with various ASL curriculums, such as Signing Naturally and TRUE+WAY ASL (TWA)

Nice To Haves

• Master's or PhD in a relevant field
• Previous experience teaching at UofT in LIN211/LIN212
• Excellent teaching evaluations
• Relevant active research

Responsibilities

• Grading of assignments, tests, and exams
• Invigilation of tests/exams
• Teaching of tutorials (if applicable)
• Assisting instructors with design and implementation of assignments, tests, and exams
• Timely email communication with the instructor
