About The Position

The Apple Services Engineering team powers services including the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books. Within ASE, the Apple Data Platform SRE team operates a large multi-cloud platform used by internal engineers developing data and AI products. The team works across infrastructure, automation, incident response, and customer support, partnering with developers to improve the reliability of data and AI services. The Service Reliability Engineer will operate and support the team’s service portfolio, including ML/AI platform services and multi-cloud infrastructure, while developing subject-matter expertise in big data platform services such as Spark, Flink, Airflow, Trino, Notebooks, REST Catalog services, and data governance. The role is also a primary contact for internal customers, diagnosing issues, communicating resolutions, and helping teams adopt platform capabilities. The engineer will own the operational health and reliability roadmap for supported services, collaborate across teams and time zones, and build automation and self-healing tools to reduce operational toil.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience.
  • At least 7 years in a Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused role.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Shell and Python.
  • Deep understanding of one or more big data technologies, such as Spark, Flink, Airflow, Trino, or Notebooks.
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes and AWS services, including IAM roles, policies, permission boundaries, KMS, EKS, RDS, S3, and cloud storage and networking fundamentals.
  • Strong experience implementing observability systems and practices, including metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, SLOs, error budgets, and fault analysis at scale; experience with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or PagerDuty.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-expert customers.
  • Solid grounding in SRE principles and prior on-call, production-support, or customer-facing support experience.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
  • Proficiency handling production databases and distributed-SQL engines, including query tuning and optimization.
  • Track record of automating manual operations through scripting or tooling.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a drive to keep learning for oneself, the team, and the organization.
  • Comfort using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code, for prototyping, code generation, and documentation, with the ability to critically review and validate generated output.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with MCP-based tooling and ML lifecycle or dataset management systems.
  • Prior experience in a customer-facing or technical support role, with a demonstrated passion for customer success.
  • Familiarity with data pipeline orchestration and workflow scheduling patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and triage production and non-production environments across data processing, ML/AI, and multi-cloud infrastructure.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule across supported services, including occasional weekday and weekend coverage.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for internal customers seeking technical resolutions; communicate status, root cause, and next steps during active issues.
  • Own the operational health of big data platform services as a subject-matter expert, driving reliability, support, and customer guidance.
  • Partner with development teams across time zones to own the customer experience, understand service architecture, and establish observability benchmarks.
  • Build automation and self-healing tooling to reduce manual toil and increase operational capacity.
  • Identify, escalate, and resolve production issues to protect platform reliability and customer experience.
  • Help internal teams understand platform capabilities and adopt tools effectively.
  • Collaborate with SRE and development partner teams, engineering, and program management to align execution with team and organizational goals.
